The North Sea resort Fedderwardersiel is a town in the municipality of Butjadingen in the Wesermarsch in northwest Lower Saxony . It lies on the Outer Weser .
history
The place was created with the construction of a new sewer and sewer port near Fedderwarden at the beginning of the 19th century. The Weser fairway , which at that time still ran close to the coast, shifted so far over time that the port lost its importance as a trading center. Today the port is connected to the Weser fairway via the Fedderwarder Priel .
Interpretation of the place name
The place name is derived from Großfedderwarden. The qualifier could be a nickname like Feddo or a family name like Federinga. A combination of “feder” for father or “federia” for father brother with Wurth , Werth would also be possible .
Culture and sights
In Fedderwardersiel, the Museum National Park House Fedderwardersiel provides information about the history of the landscape and its settlement as well as the importance and concerns of the national park. The fish shop of the Butjadinger fishing cooperative is also open all year round (even seven days a week during the season from mid-March to the Sunday of the Dead). In addition to the freshly landed garnet from the shrimp cutter, which has not yet been peeled, fresh fish, smoked fish and marinades are available.
Every year the "cutter regatta " takes place, which over the years has blossomed into the biggest festival in Butjadden. With its diverse program (paper boat regatta, Lower Saxony grenade powder championship, slip of war) it is a magnet for tourists and locals. There is also the opportunity to go on a “long trip” with a fishing cutter.
The German Society for Rescue of Shipwrecked People (DGzRS) operates a rescue station in Fedderwardersiel . Since 1993 the rescue boat of the 8.5 m class Hermann Onken has been manned by volunteers. The former motor lifeboat Wilhelmine Wiese can be viewed in a former DGzRS shed that has been converted into a museum.
Planned artificial deepening of the Weser fairway in favor of the ports of Bremerhaven and Bremen , according to critics of these measures, threaten the port. They fear that the changes in flow conditions a silt will promote the Fedderwarder Priel.
Economy and Infrastructure
In 2005 there were seven shrimp cutters in Fedderwardersiel (see: Krabben , called "Granat" by the locals) and the passenger ship Wega 2, with which trips to the Lower Saxony Wadden Sea National Park are possible. The port is of economic importance for the region both because of its fishing activities and as a tourist attraction.
