Foundation in the Middle Ages
Niens was during the early middle ages handy Frisian s march recreated colonization. The settlement was built as a flat settlement on the ridge during the 7th / 8th centuries . Founded in the 20th century AD. By the 10th century, the settlement was increased to a Wurt up to 3 meters due to heavy flooding . There were around 10 to 15 farmsteads on the Wurt, it was open until 12/13. Century densely built. It was only when the dyke began to be built that the Wurt was gradually abandoned.
Early modern age
Around 1600 there were only two farms left. The economic basis of the residents was the keeping of cattle and a small amount of agriculture . Archaeologically to let barley , broad beans , linseed and camelina evidence. Bone and antler processing indicate commercial production. There was also metal processing. Numerous textile finds were of high quality; the villagers apparently participated in the Frisian cloth trade .
20th century
During the First World War to the landside protection of the naval base was in Wilhelmshaven the Fort Niens built. In 1980 the Jericho / Langwarden nature reserve was designated as part of the Niens farmers' association.
Surname
The name Niens comes from “Nie-Innede”, meaning “new dike”. The first written mention of the place is in 1315 as "Enendse".
Administrative history
From 1933 to 1948 Niens was part of the municipality of Burhave. From 1948 to 1974 it belonged to the Langwarden municipality, then to the Butjadingen municipality. The Niens farmers include Iggewarden, Unkersburg, Nadorst, Jericho, Rugeelk, Bahnhof, Brückenhof, Unkersburg, Burmeide and Nienser Deichstrich.
