The North Sea resort of Burhave is a district of the municipality of Butjadingen , Wesermarsch district , Lower Saxony , Germany . With more than 2000 inhabitants, Burhave is the largest town in the municipality and the seat of the municipal administration.

geography

Burhave is located in Butjadingen on the North Sea coast , about 15 kilometers northwest of the Weser estuary , in the middle of marshland . There used to be a sandy beach on the coast, but over time it became more and more muddy . Changes in the flow conditions due to the artificial deepening of the Outer Weser are assumed to be the reason .

history

East Frisia at the time of the chiefs

The name is possibly derived from the Germanic word buri (settlement, residence, homestead) and from the Frisian word hove or have (church village). Burhave means something like "church settlement". The name may be related to the former townscape of Burhaves, because 400 years ago a fortified church from the 11th century formed the town center. All courtyards were arranged around the church, which stood on a high tower .

Bire / Byre, as Burhave was called earlier, was a central place in Butjadingen as early as the Middle Ages . While in earlier times the place was more inland of the Butjadingen peninsula, it became a coastal place over time due to the shifting of the coastline.

In 1334 the first market was held in Burhave . The corresponding concessions were later renewed by the rulers in Bremen and Oldenburg . The place was of little importance until the port of Langwarden had to be closed around 1700 due to increasing siltation. The rulers of Bremen and Oldenburg were interested in access to the sea, which, however, was hindered by peasant free states , which led to conflicts with them. The result was that the chiefs established themselves in Butjadingen . The disputes reached their climax in 1419, when the Burhavers built their church (today's St. Petri Church) with bulwarks and trenches to make it the safest defensive structure in the country. The defense system had to be abandoned under the onslaught of the people of Bremen, with its tower and the fortifications built up being destroyed. After the incident of 1419 the chiefs were abolished and replaced by locally elected “advisors” who led the people.

In 1509, allied troops from Oldenburg, Braunschweig and allies finally subjugated the Free States of Butjadingen and Stadland , with the decisive battles being fought at the Hartwarder Landwehr near Rodenkirchen and in the Burmeide near Langwarden. In 1667, the rulership of the Oldenburg family was finally replaced by the Danish royal family, who inherited the land.

Around 1800 there was a cold fever in the northern Wesermarsch, a form of malaria from which many people - also in Burhave - died. Average life expectancy fell to under 30 years. The fever was successfully combated by improving drainage. During the Napoleonic Wars , Butjadingen was occupied by the French from 1810 to 1813. During this time the occupiers exploited the land, as the population was burdened with high taxes and hard labor .

The first streets in Butjadingen were demanded by the population from the 1830s. In 1853 the first clinker-paved road between the fishing village of Fedderwardersiel and Burhave was completed. In 1861 the road between Oldenburg and Burhave was continuously passable. In 1865, Oldenburg land dragons were stationed as state police in Burhave for the first time .

In 1933 Eckwarden, Langwarden, Stollhamm, Tossens and Waddens were incorporated into the municipality of Burhave. This was officially renamed Butjadingen in 1936 . When this community was dissolved in 1948, Burhave regained its independence. Since March 1st 1974 it belongs to the new municipality Butjadingen.

Churches

St. Peter's Church

Evangelical Lutheran St. Petri Church: The church with space for over 600 people was built by the Osnabrück architect Franz Xaver Lütz in the neo-Gothic style in 1878–1880 as a replacement for a previous building from the 14th century that had been demolished three years earlier built in the same place. During its construction, a number of materials from the previous building were reused, including its grave slabs, old stones and the existing wood, a baptismal font from the 12th century and the Mary's bell from 1451.

Catholic Herz-Mariä-Kirche: The church is a converted schoolhouse from around 1880, which was consecrated as a church in 1955.
