Hinrich Dunkhase

Hinrich Wilhelm Dunkhase (born January 22, 1857 in Syuggewarden , † January 18, 1905 in Burhave ), also known locally as Hinnerk Dunkhase, was one of the most deserving Klootschießer in the history of Frisian sports and a pioneer of the modern dairy industry in the region. He is considered to be the founder of the Frisian Klootschießer Association . In his honor a memorial was erected in Burhave in 1932.

Youth and professional career

Hinrich Wilhelm Dunkhase was born on January 22nd, 1857 in Syuggewarden, Butjadingen, as a child of an agricultural family. He learned the profession of farmer on the local farm and took over the management of the farm at an early age. In 1888, at the age of 31, he campaigned vehemently among his professional colleagues for the development and promotion of the newly founded Burhaver dairy. He knew how to convince his colleagues that an efficient and profitable dairy industry is only possible with a modern and progressive dairy cooperative. On January 1st, 1894, at the age of only 37, he was elected chairman of the dairy cooperative's board of directors. He held this position as dairy director until his death on January 18, 1905. During his tenure he made with reforms for a significant improvement in raw milk and for better veterinary controls on imports of cattle disease TBC .

Career as an active toilet shooter

Hinrich Dunkhase rose to become one of the best toilet shooters in the region at a young age. Through almost daily training sessions with his childhood friend Gerhard Tanzen and supported by his father, he quickly gained fame beyond local borders. Hinrich Dunkhase was anything but physically predestined for the sport. While the top kloot shooters were mostly tall and extremely strong at the time, Hinrich Dunkhase was rather small and skinny, which led to the nickname "Littje Hinnerk" at the time. What set him apart was his excellent throwing technique and his enormous speed. Like his father, he was quickly accepted into the squad of the field combat teams of that time. At that time, offices were still fighting against each other, for example Amt Butjadingen versus Amt Stadland.

Career as a Klootschießer functionary

The opponents of the field fights at that time were seldom friendly to each other, there were often serious riots during the events, also due to the fact that high stakes were made. Like in his professional career, Dunkhase knew how to build friendly relationships and maintain contacts. As agreed in the field fight " Stad- un Butjoorland against Ostfreesland ", later the country struggles out of the Oldenburg - East Friesland emerged, Dunkhase, his longtime colleagues in January Neuhaus from Rodenkirchen and Gerhard Buss and Gerhard Gerdes from Ochtersum out to establish an umbrella organization that until the then unorganized Klootschießer movement should unite. But it was only through Dunkhase's initiative that intentions became reality. In May 1902 he had a "Klootschießer-Appell" printed in all regional newspapers in Oldenburg and East Friesland, which was aimed at all Klootschießer and announced a field battle against the Klootschießer from Schleswig-Holstein . A little trick by Dunkhase, because on May 25, 1902, all the well-known Klootschießer came together for a selection throw for this field fight in Burhave. In this way, Dunkhase brought everyone responsible to one table and on the same day, after long discussions, the Frisian Klootschießer Association (FKV) was founded, of which he became the first chairman. He held this office until his death and he managed almost all the association structures that are still valid today. Also in 1902 he founded the KBV Burhave association. He also encouraged other localities to organize their toilet shooters in clubs.

Early death in 1905

In his tenure from 1902 to 1905 Dunkhase did not miss any important competition and did not miss the opportunity to continue to participate actively. He was only 48 years old and was far from old, his squad nominations were still justified by his enormous throwing distances. So it was a matter of honor for him to take part in the Association Klootschießerfest in Esens (January 15-17, 1905), although his health was already unwell. His childhood friend, Gerhard Tanzen, who had traveled with him, was unable to convince the Dunkhase, now generally known as "Klootscheeterhovetling" (Klootschießerhäuptling), to leave and so he took part despite the icy temperatures. Badly marked by a dramatic cold , his friend Tanzen brought him back home after the Klootschießerfest, where he died one day later, on January 18, 1905, at the age of only 48 from the consequences of the illness. His whole life was shaped by his love for loo shooting , including his death.

Hinrich Dunkhase Memorial

Dunkhase memorial of honor

After Hinrich Dunkhase and his life's work were remembered again and again in the years and decades after his death, representatives of all Klootschießer circles came together in 1932 and erected a memorial next to the Dunkhase estate. A block of granite from the Weserurstromtal of Weserbergland was provided with the inscription:

Eala Frya Fresena
Usen founder
Hinnerk Dunkhase
De Frees'sche Klootscheeter Association
1902-1932

Under the memorial stone, a document in which his self-sacrificing work for the Klootschießer movement is honored was walled up in a roll with a daily newspaper. In the meantime, the monument has been repositioned several times for structural reasons and the small memorial stones have been integrated into the monument. Even today, wreaths are regularly laid.

Dunkhase's legacy today

Klootschießer in the field fight

The Frisian klootschieten Association is today, over 100 years after its foundation, one of the largest sports organizations in the north of Lower Saxony. It now has over 40,000 members in 262 clubs. In the meantime, in the spirit of Dunkhase, one has contact with more and more toilet shooting associations at home and abroad and holds German and European championships. Internationally, the Klootschießer are now organized in the International Bowlplaying Association .
