Location of Waddens in Lower Saxony

Waddens is a district in the east of the municipality of Butjadingen on the peninsula of the same name in the Wesermarsch district .

history

Historically, Waddens is one of the oldest settlements in Butjadingen. This only applies to the "old" Waddens, located about four kilometers to the east, which was dammed at the end of the 17th century after the Catharine flood and finally left to the sea after the Christmas flood of 1717 (146 dead, 46 destroyed houses). Where the peasant communities Brüddewarden and Klein-Eckwarden were (and are still called this on some maps instead of the place name "Waddens"), Neu-Waddens was built after the construction of St. Marcellinus and Petruskirche in 1696 .

In 1933 Waddens was incorporated into what was then Burhave . This was renamed Butjadingen in 1936 . When this community was dissolved in 1948, Waddens did not regain his independence. Since March 1st 1974 it belongs to the new municipality Butjadingen.

In 2007 the parish of Waddens was affiliated to the parish of Burhave .

Economy and Infrastructure

Economy: The town with around 400 inhabitants is characterized by agriculture. Until the 1970s, the small harbor in Waddensersiel was still used by garnet and fishing boats; today the harbor is silted up. In contrast to other places in Butjadingen, Waddens is only slightly affected by tourism.

Transport: There are ferry connections over the Weser from Nordenham to Bremerhaven and in the summer months over the Jade Bay from Eckwarderhörne to Wilhelmshaven . There is a train connection to Bremen from Nordenham. The community is connected to the A27 via the Weser tunnel south of Nordenham . Via Varel or Jaderberg you get to the A 29 .

Church: The ev.-luth. Waddens parish with the neo-Gothic St. Marcellinus and Petrus Church in Waddens is administered by the parish in Burhave.

Clubs: With the gymnastics and table tennis club, the Klootschießer and Boßel club and the table tennis club, the small town has a large number of clubs and sporting fields of activity.
