The Battle of Oosterweel took place on March 13, 1567 and is traditionally seen as the beginning of the Eighty Years War .

Jan van Marnix , who had previously sailed up the Scheldt with his fleet , was in an extremely advantageous position with his soldiers near the village of Oosterweel north of Antwerp .

Thereupon Philipp von Lannoy , Lord von Beauvoir and Captain Margarethe von Parma's Life Guard, offered to beat the rebels with the support of 400  Walloon veterans, which Lamoral von Egmond put at his disposal. So they moved north from Brussels and on the morning of March 13, 1567, faced Marnix's troops. It was easy for the battle-tested troops to break through the defensive lines and defeat the rebels in less than an hour.

William of Orange , Burggraaf of Antwerp, forbade the city's Calvinists , who could watch the battle from the walls, to help their co-religionists.

When Philipp von Lannoy learned that some Antwerp residents wanted to come to the rescue, he let 300 prisoners cycle or hang .
