The siege of Rheinberg by Dutch troops under the command of Moritz von Oranien took place from August 9 to 19, 1597 during the Eighty Years' War and ended with the capitulation and the withdrawal of the Spanish garrison. The liberation of the city of Rheinberg was part of Moritz's campaign of 1597 .

prehistory

The fortress town of Rheinberg had been a Spanish garrison for seven years , since Peter Ernst I von Mansfeld was able to successfully end the siege of Rheinberg on February 3, 1590 for his side.

On August 1, 1597 Moritz left The Hague with 7,000 infantrymen and 1,200 cavalrymen in order to tackle his offensive against the Spaniards. His first destination was the Spanish occupied city of Rheinberg , which he reached on August 9th.

course

On August 11, 1597, the appeal began , with Wilhelm Ludwig von Nassau being wounded by a bullet in the thigh. After the batteries were set up, the city was heavily shelled. After being asked to surrender twice in vain, the occupation surrendered on August 19, 1597, subject to the condition of free withdrawal.

consequences

In the following year, the Spanish commander-in-chief Francisco de Mendoza was able to recapture the city after another siege , which earned it the nickname " La puta de la guerra ", " The Whore of War ".
