Jan Wagenaar ( Jacobus Buys , 1766/7)

Jan Wagenaar (born October 25, 1709 in Amsterdam , † March 1, 1773 there ) was a Dutch historian.

Jan Wagenaar initially devoted himself to the trading stand, but then to historical studies. He died on March 1, 1773 as a council clerk in his hometown.

His most famous work is: De vaderlandsche historie (Amsterdam 1749–60, 21 vols.), Which extends to 1751 and was continued by others (Amsterdam 1788–1810, 52 vols.) Until 1802. Jacobus Houbraken provided numerous copperplate engravings for this work .

His descriptions of the United States of the Netherlands (Amsterdam. 1739, 12 vol.) And description of Amsterdam (das. 1760, 3 vol.) Should also be mentioned. In spite of great lengthiness and lack of intellectual penetration of the material, these works still have value today (1889) due to their faithful and simple representation.
