Prabhat Mukherjee

Prabhat Mukherjee ( Bengali : প্রভাত মুখার্জী , Prabhāt Mukhārjī ; * 1917 ; † 1997 ) was an Indian actor, film director and book author. He made films in the Bengali , Assamese , Oriya and Hindi languages .

Life

Prabhat Mukherjee began his career with All India Radio and as an actor in Bengali films in the 1950s. In 1956 he made his directorial debut with the film Maa . His wife Arundhati Mukherjee appeared in this as well as in the three other Bengali directorial works by Mukherjee up to 1960 . Mukherjee had previously appeared with her as an actor in Pashupati Chatterjees Shoroshi (1954) and Asit Sens Chalachal (1956). In the 1960s, Arundhati married director Tapan Sinha .

In 1958 Mukherjee made the Assamese film Puberun , which was the first film in Assamese to be shown at an international film festival, the 1960 Berlinale . He also wrote the screenplay for this Shillong drama about motherly love.

From 1962 to 1964 Mukherjee directed at least five Oriya films , including Dasyu Ratnakara (1962) in the debut film of Prashanta Nanda . Mukherjee's 1972 film Shayar-e-Kashmir Mahjoor about the Kashmiri national poet Ghulam Ahmad , known as Mahjoor , (1885–1952) was his first film in Hindi, produced by the Jammu and Kashmiri government . Balraj Sahni took on the title role . The following year, Mukherjee made two more Hindi films before turning back to working in his native language.

After the failure of his second marriage, Mukherjee went to Shirdi , turned to the teachings of Sai Baba and wrote the book "Redemption at Shirdi" in his native Bengali.
