Hans Kreissig

Hans Kreissig (born May 23, 1856 , † December 28, 1929 in Dallas , Texas ) was an American pianist , music teacher and conductor of German origin. In 1900 he was the founding conductor of what is now the Dallas Symphony Orchestra .

Life

Kreissig was born in Germany in 1856. After studying composition and conducting with Arthur Sullivan in London, he played in several European countries and accompanied the cornetist Jules Levy on the piano.

At Christmas 1883 he traveled to Dallas , Texas with a London opera company . In 1884 he settled down there with piano and organ lessons. He led choirs in Jewish synagogues and Catholic churches. In December 1886 he accepted the offer of the secular male choir Dallas Frohsinn to teach and conduct students for a fee. In October 1887 he directed the choir at a performance of Charles Gounod's Faust ; Henry J. Frees played the piano. In March 1892 the choir performed with an orchestra and Kreissig conducted a. a. Works by Franz von Suppè and Johannes Brahms . After taking the choir to Texan festivals in San Antonio (1887), Houston (1902), Galveston (1909) and Austin (1911), he stopped conducting in 1912. He also founded a Beethoven trio and a chamber music group called the Phoenix Club. In his last creative period he worked as a piano teacher.

In 1900 he was ready to set up an orchestra in Dallas. Kreissig promoted his project in Dallas and was able to keep the orchestra alive for several seasons (see Dallas Symphony Orchestra ). In 1905 he was followed by the concertmaster of German descent Walter J. Fried .

Kreissig was married to a Texan woman of French descent.

Hans Kreissig Legacy Society

In 1987 a Hans Kreissig Legacy Society was founded to look after the orchestra's donors.
