The London Coliseum (also Coliseum Theater ) is a theater building in London . It is located on St. Martin's Lane in London's West End . The building, made of Swedish marble , was opened in 1904 by order of the impresario Oswald Stoll according to plans by the architect Frank Matcham , who also designed the London Palladium . Since 1968 it has served as the venue for the English National Opera . The London Coliseum is the largest theater in London's West End with 2,359 seats.

history

The Coliseum was inaugurated on December 24, 1904 with a variety show. In 1911, The Hooligan , the last play by the writer WS Gilbert , premiered here.

Between 1931 and 1968, the theater changed the name from London Coliseum to Coliseum Theater , as here, the musical comedy The White Horse Inn in the English version of The White Horse Inn 651 times was performed. In 1968 the Sadler's Wells Opera Company moved from Sadler's Wells to the Coliseum; it changed its name to English National Opera (ENO) in 1974 and acquired the property for £ 12.8 million. From 2000 to 2004 the building, which has been registered as a Grade II * structure since 1960 , underwent a thorough renovation.
