Seth Holt , born in James Aubrey GB Holt (born June 21, 1923 in the British Mandate of Palestine , † February 13, 1971 in London ) was a British film director , film producer , screenwriter and film editor .

Life

Born in the British mandate of Palestine, the son of English parents had attended the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art from 1940 and then played theater as a small actor on repertory stages. In 1942 he switched to documentary film as an assistant editor. Through his brother-in-law, the film director Robert Hamer , Holt came to the feature film in 1944 as an assistant (at Champagne Charlie ) and from 1949 worked as an independent editor on various top comedies for the production company Ealing (e.g. Being a millionaire and Titfield-Express ). In 1954 Holt was appointed producer by Ealing and in this capacity he was also responsible for Alexander Mackendrick's legendary black comedy Ladykillers .

Seth Holt made his debut as a director in 1958 with the crime film Hunted . Holt's directorial output was very limited due to strong alcohol addiction . The majority of his films - thriller, war, agent and horror films - testify to a high level of professionalism and considerable entertainment value, even if Holt never showed artistic ambitions. Above all, the horror thriller A Dead Plays Piano found recognition. He was then allowed to direct some episodes of the TV crime series Secret Order for John Drake and shot cinema productions with national and international stars, including Carroll Baker , Peter van Eyck , Hansjörg Felmy and the Hollywood legend Bette Davis .

Seth Holt died completely unexpectedly in February 1971 in the middle of the filming of the hammer horror film The Tomb of the Bloody Mummy . Production had to be stopped by Michael Carreras .
