Born in Galicia , Rey moved to Barcelona during the Spanish Civil War (1936-1939) . There he was a student of the Spanish painter Ramon Rogent .

His works are best known for depictions of landscapes, flowers and country life. His most famous painting El Port from the port in Barcelona was made in 1977.

Gabino Rey's works live mainly from lighting design, which earned him the nickname “maestro del aire y de la luz” (master of air and light).

Artistically, Gabino Rey always strived for his role model, Francisco de Goya , which is evident in the technique Rey used, but which remains unmatched.
