The National Scientific Stefanyk Library of Ukraine , also shortened Stefanyk Library ( Ukrainian Львівська національна наукова бібліотека України імені Василя Стефаника ;. Scientific transliteration L'vivs'ka nacional'na Naukova biblioteka Ukrainy imeni Vasylja Stefanyka ) in Lviv is one of the Ukrainian National Libraries and after the Vernadskyj National Library of Ukraine in Kiev with over 8 million units the second largest academic library in Ukraine. As such, it is one of the institutions of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine .

history

The library was formally established on January 2, 1940 after Eastern Galicia was occupied by the Soviet Union as a result of the Hitler-Stalin Pact . For this purpose, the buildings of the Polish library “ Ossolineum ” and its book holdings were seized and filled with the treasures of 84 other libraries and private collections. After the Second World War, important holdings of the Ossolineum were transferred to the now Polish city of Wroclaw .

In 1971 the library was named after the modernist writer and politician Wassyl Stefanyk .

Restorations and extensive renovations of the library with the introduction of electronic catalogs etc. took place under the direction of Laryssa Kruschelnyzka from the first years of Ukraine's independence . The historian and journalist Myroslaw Romanjuk has continued her work since 2003.

In 1999 the periodicals department got its own building, donated by Iwanna and Marjan Kots.

The library has its own publishing house, which publishes some series such as “Ukrainian Journalism in Names”, “Scientific Treatises of the Stefanyk Library” and bibliographical series, particularly on periodicals, book history research, editions and bibliographies in small editions. Noteworthy are 9 volumes of the "Repertuar des Ukrainischen Buch 1798-1916", the more than 20 biobibliographical volumes "Ukrainischer Journalismus in Namen" as well as 2 volumes by K. Kurylyschyn, "The Ukrainian Press during the German Occupation (1939-1944)" and the so far 4 volumes “Ukrainian Press in Ukraine and the World: XIX-XX. Century".
