James Poe
James Poe (born October 4, 1921 in Dobbs Ferry , New York , † January 24, 1980 in Los Angeles County , California ) was an American screenwriter .
Life
Prior to his career in the film business, James Poe studied at St. John's College in Annapolis , Maryland .
He wrote his first screenplay in 1948 for the film drama Close-Up . In 1955 and 1956 he worked on two projects by director Robert Aldrich . In 1957 he won the Oscar in the category Best Screenplay for the literary film Around the World in 80 Days . Two years later he was nominated again for an Oscar, this time for his screenplay for The Cat on a Hot Tin Roof . Two further Oscar nominations followed in 1964 and 1970. His last three works as a screenwriter were for television productions, the last one was realized posthumously in 1992 under the title Hotel am See .
From 1969 to 1978 James Poe was married to actress Barbara Steele . They have a child together.
