Susan Peters

Susan Peters (actually: Suzanne Carnahan ; born July 3, 1921 in Spokane , Washington , † October 23, 1952 in Visalia , California ) was an American film actress .

Life

youth

Suzanne Carnahan was born into simple circumstances as the daughter of a civil engineer in Spokane. Her father died early in a traffic accident, and her mother, who could not earn enough money to support them both, let the girl grow up with a grandmother in Los Angeles from the age of seven .

Career

Enthusiastic about film at an early age, Carnahan attended the drama school founded by Max Reinhardt until she was discovered by a talent scout from Warner Bros. and signed in 1940. 1940, at the age of 19, Carnahan's film debut took place in Susan and God on the side of Joan Crawford and Fredric March . Shortly thereafter, she signed MGM and "baptized" her with the name Susan Peters.

In 1942, while filming Tish , she met the film actor Richard Quine , who was a year older than her. Both in front of and later behind the film camera, the two were a married couple when they married on November 7, 1943.

Her breakthrough came in 1942 when Peters took on the supporting role of Kitty Chilcet in Found Years ( Random Harvest ) , and in 1943 was nominated for an Oscar in the category Best Supporting Actress .

death

Their end actually began on January 1, 1945. Both she and her husband Richard Quine were on the duck hunt, which is still popular in the USA today. An attempt was made to pick up her loaded weapon from the ground. This hit Peters in the spine ; as a result, she was paralyzed from the waist down. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer paid her all hospital costs, but was forced to terminate the existing contract.

Although, like her husband, they adopted a boy, Timothy, in 1946, the marriage itself was over. In September 1948, after five years of marriage, they divorced. In the same year Peters tried a comeback with The Sign of the Ram , a drama in which she impersonated the head of a British family who was also in a wheelchair.

From 1951, Peters got kidney problems and greater pain. Depression and self-abandonment were further consequences that eventually culminated in a radical starvation diet. Susan Peters died in October 1952 at the age of only 31. Today a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame commemorates the actress.
