Ann Savage
Ann Savage (* 19th February 1921 as Bernice Maxine Lyon in Columbia , South Carolina ; † 25. December 2008 in Hollywood , California ) was an American film actress .
Life
After the early death of her father, Bernice Maxine Lyon moved with her mother from South Carolina to Los Angeles. She took acting lessons from Max Reinhardt , who also gave her the stage name Ann Savage . The attractive blonde made her film debut with Columbia Pictures in 1943 . She was denied significant roles in big films, instead she mostly worked as a leading lady in B-films and as a popular pin-up model. The actress achieved lasting fame in 1945 in the role of the vicious hitchhiker Vera in the film noir diversion from Edgar G. Ulmer . With other, mostly cheaply produced crime films, she established her image as a femme fatale .
In total, Savage appeared in nearly 40 films between 1943 and 1955; thereafter she was only seen twice on the big screen: 1986 in Fire with Fire and in a celebrated comeback in 2007 in My Winnipeg by director Guy Maddin . After the death of her third husband in 1969, she worked as a legal assistant, and in 1979 she obtained a pilot's license. Most recently she lived in a retirement home for actors in Los Angeles, where she died at Christmas 2008 at the age of 87. She was buried in Hollywood Forever Cemetery .
