Janko Messner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Janko Messner (born December 13, 1921 in Aich / Dob, now part of the city of Bleiburg / Pliberk ; † October 26, 2011 in Klagenfurt am Wörthersee ) was an Austrian writer and Carinthian Slovene .

Life

Messner attended high school in Klagenfurt and St. Paul and served in a punishment company of the German armed forces during World War II . After being wounded in Sicily and in 1945 in East Prussia , he was captured by British forces in the same year. He was able to flee to Yugoslavia , where he studied German , Slavic and Romance studies in Ljubljana and taught at the high school in Ravne .

When he came into conflict with the Yugoslav State Security Service in Udba in 1955 , he moved to Carinthia, where he taught at the Slovenian grammar school in Klagenfurt from 1963 to 1980. In 1984 he visited Ernesto Cardenal in Nicaragua and in 1999 was a candidate on the KPÖ's Carinthian list together with the sculptor Alfred Hrdlicka . In his books, he addressed the resistance of Slovenian Carinthians against National Socialism and the treatment of minorities in Austria after the Second World War, in particular the non-fulfillment of the minority rights enshrined in the Austrian State Treaty, such as the bilingual topographical inscriptions, which were not completely available despite the findings of the Constitutional Court (cf. . Local sign dispute ).

His son Mirko Messner is the national spokesman for the KPÖ .
