Mirko Messner ; actually: Štefan Miroslav Messner ; (Born December 16, 1948 in Slovenj Gradec , Slovenia ) is an Austrian Slavist and communist politician. The Carinthian Slovene has been the national spokesman for the KPÖ since March 2006 .

Live and act

Messner comes from a politically active family. His father Janko Messner was a member of the Slovenian Liberation Front in Carinthia after the end of the war, and his mother, who came from North Macedonia , was a Yugoslav partisan during World War II .

After graduating from high school, he studied Slavic and German at the University of Vienna , where he also received his doctorate in 1977. Before working as a publicist, Messner temporarily ran an IT company.

As a teenager he was politically involved in the Association of Socialist Middle School Students in Carinthia. After its dissolution, Messner joined the Communist Student Union while studying and was involved in the club of Slovenian students . During this time he started the Slovenian student newspaper Kladivo (published until 1989). In 1973 he joined the KPÖ. When he was unable to enforce his view of nationality policy on the issue of the Slovenian minority in the party, Messner resigned all party offices in 1987 (including being a member of the Central Committee) and quit his job as a party employee. After the Graz Renewal Party Congress of the KPÖ, he was initially active in the reconstitution of the KPÖ in Klagenfurt and was finally elected to the party's national executive committee and its minority spokesman. Finally, in March 2006, he was elected national spokesman. He held this office together with Melina Klaus . Messner was the top candidate of his party in all four Austrian parliamentary elections since 2006. From 2009 to 2016 he was also editor-in-chief and publisher of Volksstimme, a monthly magazine . Since 2012 he has been the sole national spokesman for the KPÖ.
