Stipe Šuvar

Stipe Šuvar (born February 17, 1936 in Zagvozd , Yugoslavia (now Croatia ), † June 29, 2004 in Zagreb ) was a Yugoslav or Croatian politician and sociologist.

Stipe Šuvar studied law and sociology at the University of Zagreb . In 1955 he joined the Union of Communists of Yugoslavia (BDKJ). 1968–1972 he was editor of the magazine Naše teme (Our Topics), 1983–1987 of the magazine Socijalizam (Socialism). From 1967 he was a lecturer at the University of Zagreb, from 1974 as assistant professor and from 1982 as professor of sociology.

In 1972 he became a member of the Central Committee of BDK Croatia, from 1974 to 1982 he was Minister for Education and Culture in the SR Croatia . From 1986 he was a member of the Central Committee and 1988–1989 chairman of the BDKJ. Initially, Šuvar was considered more of a hardliner, but as the BDKJ chairman, he was willing to reform and advocated giving up the party's monopoly on power.

After the dissolution of Yugoslavia, Šuvar initially withdrew from politics. From 1994 he published the journal Hrvatska Ljevica (Croatian Left), which was in opposition to the Tuđman government . In 1997 he founded the Socijalistička Radnička Partija (Socialist Labor Party) and became its chairman.
