Ravne na Koroškem (until the end of the Second World War : Guštanj , German : Gutenstein ) is a small town and municipality in Slovenia . It is located in the historical Koroška ( Lower Carinthia ) region and in the statistical region of the same name .

Ravne is the largest city in the Mežatal ( Mieß ), which forms an approximately 600 m wide expansion here. Other notable bodies of water are the Zelenbreški potok ( Reka ) flowing in from the north and the Kotulja ( Dullbach ) flowing in from the south . In addition to the parts of the Mežatal, the municipality in the north and south also includes mountainous terrain, which is part of the Karavanke ( Karavanke ). The main town is at 394  m. ü. A. , the highest point is at 1699  m. ü. A. the Uršlja gora at the southern boundaries.

The municipality comprises 16 localities. The German exonyms in brackets were mainly used by the German-speaking population until the area was ceded to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in 1918 and are largely uncommon today. (Population figures as of January 1, 2017):

history

The road Virunum - Celeia ran through today's Ravne in Roman times . In the 11th century, Heinrich II gave the area away to the Bamberg bishops, who settled German farmers who cleared and founded the town. The place was first mentioned in writing as Gutenstain in 1263 . After that the settlement became known as the center of blacksmithing. In addition to Prävali , Gutenstein became a center of the Lower Carinthian heavy industry. Until the end of the 19th century there was a steel mill for weapons in the place. With the decline of this branch of industry and the associated unemployment, many residents of the valley emigrated. A steel mill is still in operation in Ravne today.

In 1880 the then market town of Gutenstein had 930 inhabitants. Of these, 604 were German (65%) and 311 Slovenian (33%). In the last Austrian census of 1910, 75 percent of Gutensteiners named German as a colloquial language.

In 1893 the Slovenian author Prežihov Voranc was born in what is now the municipality . He dealt with the life of the disadvantaged in his homeland.

Until 1918, at the end of the First World War , Gutenstein belonged to the Crown Land of Carinthia , Cisleithania , Austria-Hungary . Despite its predominantly German population, it was assigned by the victorious powers to the newly formed Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes in the Treaty of Saint Germain and annexed by this after South Slav troops had already occupied the area militarily in 1919. During the Second World War, Gutenstein / Guštanj was briefly part of the Carinthian Gau of the German Empire .

After the end of World War II, Guštanj was renamed Ravne because of its German-sounding name.

Ravne received city ​​rights in Yugoslavia in 1952 .
