Clifton James

Clifton James (born May 29, 1920 in Spokane , Washington , † April 15, 2017 in Gladstone , Oregon ) was an American actor . His best-known role was that of sheriff J. W. Nepomuk Pepper in the James Bond films Live and Let Die and The Man with the Golden Gun .

Life

Clifton James was born in 1920 and grew up in Portland . During World War II he served in the South Pacific and was honored with several awards including the Silver Star , the Bronze Star Medal , the Purple Heart and six Service Stars .

James got his first roles on television in the early 1950s. He also appeared at screenings on Broadway .

James achieved a high degree of popularity in 1973 with the James Bond film James Bond 007 - Live and Let Die , in which he portrayed the sheriff Pepper, a backwoods police officer, in a heavily caricatured way. The Pepper figure was so popular that the producers used it again the following year in James Bond 007 - The Man with the Golden Gun . James played an almost identical role in 1976 in the comedic thriller Trans-America-Express , where he was seen as Sheriff Chauncey. James worked in the film business until his death.

In addition to his film career, James had guest appearances in a variety of well-known series, including Bonanza , Smoking Guns , A Duke Seldom Comes Alone , Dallas, and The A-Team . James was in front of the camera for 53 years and died on April 15, 2017 at the age of 96.
