Elizabeth Wilson (born April 4, 1921 in Grand Rapids , Michigan - † May 9, 2015 in New Haven , Connecticut ) was an American film, television and theater actress.

life and career

After studying at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York City, Elizabeth Wilson made her film debut in Alfred Hitchcock's 1946 thriller Notorious , although she only took on a minor role as a party guest. In the 1950s she was able to establish herself as a supporting actress through television and theater appearances. On Broadway , the character actress played in a total of 15 productions between 1953 and 2000. In 1972 she won the Tony Award for Best Supporting Actress for her appearance in Stricks and Bones . One of her early successes on Broadway was the role of Christine Schoenwalder in the play Picnic , which she also represented in the 1955 film of the same name .

Wilson became known to a wide audience in 1967 as the mother of Dustin Hoffman in the classic film The Graduation . Wilson later made three more films with graduate director Mike Nichols . Her other notable film roles include the villainous businesswoman Abigail Craven in the horror comedy Addams Family (1991) and the secretary of Harrison Ford in the drama About Henry (1991). As a television actress, Wilson has guest roles in series such as Murder Is Her Hobby or Criminal Intent , and she received an Emmy nomination for her role in the television miniseries Nutcracker: Money, Madness & Murder . Although she had largely withdrawn from the film and television business in the mid-1990s, she took on the role of Franklin D. Roosevelt's mother again in Hyde Park on the Hudson with Bill Murray in 2012 .

Although Elizabeth Wilson was often cast in maternal roles on screen, she was never married and had no children. She died in May 2015 at the age of 94.
