Rudolf Asmus

Rudolf Asmus (born October 30, 1921 in Zlín , Moravia , Czechoslovakia ; † February 13, 2000 in Berlin ) was a Czech opera singer in the bass-baritone voice who worked in the GDR from 1956 .

Life

After studying singing, he made his stage debut in Ostrava and in 1953 came to the Prague National Theater through engagements in Brno . In 1956 Walter Felsenstein , the founder and director of the Komische Oper , brought him to Berlin. Here the singer celebrated great national and international successes in various opera productions.

With television adaptations of well-known operas directed by Frank Beyer and Walter Felsenstein, he also became known to the audience in front of the television screen. In 1981 he sang the night watchman in Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg in a production by Harry Kupfer . In 1988 his life's work was honored with an honorary membership of the Komische Oper zu Berlin. Even after that, he appeared in small roles at his parent company, such as Samiel in Der Freischütz (premiere 1989), Finance Minister Antonio in Die Banditen (premiere 1989), Lillas Pastia in Carmen (premiere 1991) and Luther in Hoffmanns Erzählungen (premiere 1993 ). He had his stage farewell at the beginning of December 1996 as the organ player on the mountain (= Handel) in the last performance of Harry Kupfer's legendary production of the Handel opera Giustino .

He acted in 37 different roles, such as in the clever little fox , Hoffmann's stories , Knight Bluebeard , A Midsummer Night's Dream and as a partner of Irmgard Arnold in the musical Der Fiedler auf dem Dach as milkman Tewje.

TV recordings of his roles exist of Förster im Schlauen Füchslein (1965), Leporello in Don Giovanni (1966), the four villains in Hoffmann's Tales (1973), Popolani in Ritter Blaubart (1973) and most recently Dr. Bartolo in Figaro's Wedding (1975) and Handel in Giustino (1984).
