The Wolfgang-Heinz-Ring was donated in 1985 by the Association of Theater Workers of the GDR for outstanding stage actors. The rings are awarded every five years and are adorned with an opal . The inspiration was the ring parable from the drama Nathan the Wise by Gotthold Ephraim Lessing, often presented by Wolfgang Heinz .

After the theater association was dissolved, the right of the award went to the director of the Deutsches Theater Berlin .
