Bob Godfrey

Robert John "Bob" Godfrey ( MBE ; born January 27, 1921 in Maitland , New South Wales , Australia ; † February 21, 2013 ) was a British animator , film producer and director .

Life

Bob Godfrey was born to British parents in Australia, where they emigrated after the end of the First World War . Shortly afterwards the family returned to England . He grew up in Ilford , Essex and attended school there. In 1941 he joined the Royal Marines , where he served until shortly after the end of World War II. In 1947 he married and got a job with David Hand , a former Walt Disney employee ; however, he was released shortly afterwards.

In the late 1940s he got a job at the Larkins animation studio, where he worked as a draftsman for several years. He then founded the production company Biographic together with some colleagues , where mainly commercials were produced in the 1950s and until the mid-1960s. In 1964 he founded Bob Godfrey's Movie Emporium and, in addition to animated films, also produced real shorts. For the animated - Short Henry 9 'til 5 he received in 1971 his first British film award . Two years later he was nominated for the first Oscar for Kama Sutra Rides Again . In 1976 he received the Oscar for Best Animated Short Film for Great . In 1980 and 1994 he received another Oscar nomination and in 1984 his second BAFTA award .

In 1986 he was awarded an MBE for his services to the film industry. His cousin is the writer and screenwriter A.CH Smith .
