Dream Doll , the Croatian distribution title Zemlja Snova , is a British-Yugoslav animated short film by Bob Godfrey and Zlatko Grgić from 1979. It is dedicated to Želimir Matko , the director of the Zagreb Film Festival who died in 1977 .

action

A small officer with wire glasses lives alone. Alone he watches the change from caterpillars to butterflies, walks alone past cinemas and crowded cafés and sadly passes a sex shop . Electrified, he stops when he sees a sex doll named Dream Doll for sale in the shop window . He buys a blonde inflatable doll that he takes home in a small box. A first attempt at inflation fails, but with the help of an air pump he soon has a life-size, naked blonde in front of him. He hugs her happily and she slips away from his arms and floats on the ceiling. The next day the doll follows him everywhere, hovering over him, but he manages to shake it off. In the evening it hovers over his bed and he tries to lie down on it, but it slips out from under his body and floats again on the ceiling. The man falls asleep on an armchair, depressed.

The next day, the man is doing his job as a civil servant and is stamping when the doll suddenly hovers over his desk. He happily takes her in his arms and is shortly afterwards fired by his boss. When he is sitting in an embrace with the doll on a park bench, a bourgeois woman with a dog calls the police. The man now goes out into the great outdoors with his doll, where he is happy hand in hand with the doll hovering above him. Three petty criminals lie in wait for him, beat him down and finally want to rape the supposed woman when she runs out of breath. The men flee in horror. The man remains with the little rubber residue of his dream doll and breaks down in tears. All the inflatable dolls in the city, regardless of whether they are being used as sex toys or air mattresses, now rise into the air and float towards the man. He happily takes the hand of a blonde doll and floats away with all the dolls in the sky.

background

Along with Henry 9 'til 5 , Kama Sutra Rides Again , Instant Sex and Bio-Woman, Dream Doll is one of Godfrey's films that satirically deal with the sex life of the British. “The juxtaposition of the dispassionate, inhibited British and unusual, extreme sexual practices reveals the real inhibition and hypocrisy at the heart of British culture,” so the criticism. The films are a surreal satire on the social identity of the common man and the reticence of British men. Dream Doll , which was approved for adults only by the British Board of Film Censors, is also considered a satire on the film The Red Balloon .

Awards

Dream Doll was nominated in 1980 for an Oscar in the category " Best Animated Short Film ", but could not prevail against Every Child . Bob Godfrey also received a 1980 BAFTA nomination for Best Short Film .

  1. "The juxtaposition of the passionless and restrained British male in the face of seemingly outlandish and extreme sexual practices comically exposes the essential repressiveness and hypocrisy at the heart of British culture." Cf. portrait: Godfrey, Bob (1921–) on screenonline. org
