Vera-Ellen

Vera-Ellen (born Vera-Ellen Westmeyer Rohe on February 16, 1921 in Norwood , Ohio , † August 30, 1981 in Los Angeles , California ) was an American actress .

Life

From the age of ten, she received dance training at the Hessler Dancing School and at the Serova School of Dancing in New York. She first played on classical stages such as night clubs and music halls. In 1939 she made her debut on Broadway . After that she celebrated some success in musicals and revues like By Jupiter .

In 1944, the Hollywood mogul Samuel Goldwyn brought her to film and gave her one of the two leading roles in the Danny Kaye vehicle The Wonder Man , where she dances and tapes to the song So in Love . After another Danny Kaye comedy The Hero of the Day , the artist found her true calling in the film musical. There she landed, especially with her role as Gene Kelly's underground acquaintance Ivy Smith in Today we go for a stroll, a great success.

In the next few years she was seen at the side of Bing Crosby , Frank Sinatra or Fred Astaire . She withdrew from film in 1956 with the film The Woman of My Sehnsucht .

Private life

Vera-Ellen was married to Robert Hightower from 1945 to 1946 and to Victor Rothschild from 1954 to 1966. She was the mother of one child who died of sudden infant death as a baby . The actress died of cancer in 1981.
