The love letters of the Baroness von S ... is a German silent film from 1924 by Henrik Galeen with Mia May in the title role.

action

Baroness von S. is a cultured middle-aged lady; her marriage has become more and more of a routine over the past two decades. During a trip to sunny Italy, she hopes to find relaxation and a new zest for life. On site, she met the young street musician Giovanni. He has everything that her noble husband does not have: youth, freshness, passion, temperament and the enthusiasm with which Giovanni tears her out of her everyday marriage and routine. She quickly falls in love with the younger man, and he reciprocates her feelings. Giovanni writes her letters full of passion and affection, which she replies without ever sending these replies. The baroness, for whom conjugal fidelity means everything, introduces him to high society. When she wants to return to her husband's home, the baroness ends her affair with Giovanni with a heavy heart, since both are of different social origins. As a parting present, she hands him her love letters that have never been sent.

After a year the baroness sees her beau from Italy again, and she realizes that it was a big mistake to have left her written, intimate confessions to this basically unknown man. Because Giovanni, meanwhile a penniless vagabond, tries to blackmail the baroness with her legacy. Things came to a head dramatically, and a scuffle finally broke out in which Giovanni had a fatal accident. The baron forgives his wife for her ill-considered steps, born of frustration in her marriage, and a reconciliation takes place.

Reviews

In the Neue Freie Presse of November 18, 1924, it says: "The strength of this very nice film lies in the excellent, finely toned acting of the actors and in the discreet, chamber-like direction. The photography is also very good and is often more interesting. The subject itself is a bit conventional, also in its working through. The still very, very beautiful Mia May plays here, similar to the famous "Tragedy of Love", the beautiful woman entre deux ages Twenty-year-old, peaceful marriage almost succumbs to the frenzy of a second youth, only to find her way back into the storm-proof enclosure of her home. The one that put her in danger, the young, beautiful, Italian street violinist is portrayed very real by Memo Benassi. Desdemona Mazza is the real, glowy-eyed, hot-hearted one Italian woman who fights with courage and passion against the blonde Signora, to whom she is afraid to lose her Giovanni had. Joe May's artistic direction can be felt in every little detail. "

In Paimann's film lists it can be read: "The active post of the picture is the portrayal of the main role by Mia May, behind which the rest of the ensemble noticeably lags behind. After a reasonable exposure, the subject has lengths, the direction cut day and night shots together."
