Harry Beresford
Henry William Walter Horseley Beresford (born November 4, 1863 in London , England - † October 4, 1944 in Los Angeles , California ) was a British actor and author.
Life
Harry Beresford worked as an actor from around 1880, when there were no films. That is why he spent the first decades of his acting career exclusively in the theater, first in England and later in the United States . From 1919 to 1930 Beresford starred in eight plays on Broadway in New York City . Probably his best-known theatrical role was the drunken townspeople Clem Hawley in the original performance of The Old Soak .
At the age of over 60, Beresford made his film debut in 1925 and starred in 56 films over the next twelve years, with his appearances mostly being mentioned in the credits . The character actor played particularly often in supporting roles doctors - that is, doctors and other scholars or scientists. He had minor appearances in lavish Hollywood productions of the 1930s such as Dinner at eight (1933), David Copperfield (1935; as Dr. Chillip) and Anna Karenina (1935; as Matve).
In 1938 Harry Beresford retired from the film business. In addition, he worked as a writer of plays and books, so the film Long Shot (1939) with Marsha Hunt was based on Beresford's original story. He died in 1944 a month before his 81st birthday. Beresford was married to actress Edith Wylie from 1909 until his death. He had previously been married to actress Emma Dunn from 1897 until their divorce in 1909 , with whom he also had a daughter named Vera (* 1901). Due to a coincidental occupation, the divorced Beresford and Dunn were again in front of the camera in 1935 as a married couple in the film Seven Keys to Baldpate .
