James Benning ( Viennale 2012)

James Benning (born December 28, 1942 in Milwaukee , Wisconsin ) is an American avant-garde filmmaker and documentary filmmaker .

Life

James Benning is the son of German immigrants . He studied at the University of Wisconsin and has worked at the California Institute of the Arts since 1987 .

Benning is an independent filmmaker and usually works completely alone. His films mostly concentrate on individual, minute-long shots of American landscapes , buildings or places that, except for the change of location, manage without a cut . The settings are often exactly the same length; Benning dispenses with a voiceover, instead the local soundscape can be heard.

Since the mid-1990s, his films have focused on the landscapes of the American Southwest . Among his most famous films is part of its 2000/2001 resulting California - trilogy consisting of the movies El Valley Centro , Sogobi and Los .

In 2009 he shot outside North America for the first time; the film Ruhr , made in the Ruhr area , is also Benning's first digitally shot film.

Benning's film Stemple Pass (2012) was shown as a world premiere in the Forum section at the 2013 Berlinale . In 2014, his film 13 Lakes was inducted into the National Film Registry .

The Austrian Film Museum deals with Benning's oeuvre - in addition to an overall retrospective including book publication, the release of works on DVD and the restoration of films in the house's collection, there are regular premieres of newer films.

His daughter is the experimental filmmaker and musician Sadie Benning .
