from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The backup_festival is an international short film festival for young talents that takes place annually in Weimar . It seeks new approaches to the medium of film and supports the creative examination of the limits and possibilities of the cinematic format. The festival promotes and enables an intensive exchange between film, design and media artists , as well as theorists and producers .

overview

The backup_festival deals with the development of the film format. It is looking for avant-garde cross - border commuters who relate existing categories, formats and genres of film to one another, dissolve them and reassemble them. It is more about new, captivating ideas and innovative forms than about effort and technical perfection.

In addition to the awards for the contributions, the backup_festival also presents a diverse supporting program. This consists of the backup.connect, backup.at.home, backup.lounge and backup.club. The aim is to create an area for communication, discussion and reflection in a combination of workshops , podiums and installations . Media professionals from all over the world can present their projects to a broader public and establish contacts for future cooperation.

The backup_festival has been supported by the Bauhaus Film Institute (BFI) for several years.

Compared to other film festivals , the backup_festival is not primarily aimed at film schools, but rather at students and graduates from art, media and design colleges. The backup_festival offers visitors and interested parties a mixture of the international media scene, creative exchange and inspiring get-togethers.

founding

The festival was launched in 1999 in Weimar, the year of the Capital of Culture, by students from the faculties of media and design at the Bauhaus University . The focus is on the attempt to create a continuous inventory of the new media and to build a bridge between the application of digital techniques and the traditional medium of film. Students as well as professors from the university provided support and set themselves the goal of offering a platform for young and committed media designers, creatives and filmmakers. Under the festival management of Juliane Fuchs, a media designer, backup can look back on an eventful and successful festival history after fifteen years. In 2006 it reached its high point with 3,000 visitors and 1,100 international entries from 38 countries.

program

The focus of the festival is the screen presentation of extraordinary cinematic works that are competing together. Students and alumni of the Bauhaus-Universität Weimar will preselect the contributions shown . The films are judged by an expert jury that is made up of new filmmakers, television producers, producers, distributors and media theorists every year.

Parties

The parties during the festival are part of the extensive supporting program. They invite students, Weimar residents, artists and festival goers to celebrate together.

backup.award

The heart of the backup_festival is about experimental short films that break up previous categorizations and create innovative forms. The contributions should be characterized by an unusual way of creating. The backup.award wants to highlight productions that stand out due to their special narrative style, structure or aesthetics.

backup.clip.award

The backup.clip.award stands for the symbiosis of image and music. The concept of music video , which is considered commercially extinct , is being reawakened with the backup.clip.award as an important test field for the next generation. We are looking for experimental music videos that use different media and techniques to create an extraordinary mixture of film and music.

backup.at.home

Backup @ home brings some of the short films submitted to the private, cozy shared apartments of Weimar students. Every day of the festival there is a short film evening in a different flat share, to which anyone interested is invited.
