action

As in 2019, the natural disasters increase, the international community decided under the leadership of the United States and China to build a global network of weather monitoring - satellite , which has been nicknamed "Dutch Boy". Jake Lawson is the chief designer of "Dutch Boy", but is relieved of his post after he unauthorized commissioning of the satellite network to protect thousands of people from storms. He is succeeded by his brother Max, who works for US Secretary of State Leonard Dekkom.

Three years later, “Dutch Boy” is to be handed over to the control of the international community by the USA. After the inhabitants of a village in Afghanistan were frozen to death by an apparently defective weather control satellite, it was brought to the International Climate Space Station (ICSS) for investigation. A technician steals the satellite's disk and dies in an airlock accident. Max is hired by US President Andrew Palma to investigate these events and he is able to convince Jake to help his old crew aboard the ICSS.

Meanwhile, Cheng Long, an employee of Max in Hong Kong , finds clues as to what the incident in Afghanistan is all about. Cheng contacts Max and explains that he nearly died in an unusual weather event in Hong Kong and that he no longer has access to the satellite logs. Cheng Max also warns that further weather disasters triggered by “Dutch Boy” could lead to a chain reaction that would end in a geostorm .

Jake has meanwhile arrived at the ICSS and wants to investigate the faulty Hong Kong satellite together with Ute Fassbinder, the commander of the space station. However, the satellite is destroyed when the loading crane malfunctions. The crew then discovered that a data carrier from a blown bulkhead got caught in the space station in the technician's accident. Jake and Ute to the media in a spacewalk mountains but it secret from the crew after Jake's spacesuit had a defect and it suspects a traitor among them.

Cheng decides to fly to Washington to meet Max. Shortly before the scheduled meeting, Cheng was run over by a car. When Max rushes to his aid, Cheng calls him the word "Zeus" before he dies. Jake and Ute found out on board the ICSS that the technician was deliberately killed and that the behavior of the satellites was not due to any malfunction. In an encrypted video message, Jake lets his brother know not to trust anyone. Together with the technology expert Dana, Max gets information about the "Zeus" project.

On the ICSS, the crew destroys other faulty satellites with the help of replacement satellites. Jake and Ute find a computer virus that has infected "Dutch Boy" in the technician's locker . Max informs Jake about the Zeus project, which turns "Dutch Boy" into a weapon. Jake explains that the only way to delete the virus found is to restart the satellite computer. However, restarting the system requires approval by the president's biometric "kill code". Since Jake and Max can't trust the president, Max persuades his friend Sarah, who works for the Secret Service , to help them.

At the Democratic Party conference in Orlando , where President Palma is also giving a speech, Max discovers that the city is the next target in a series of superstorms that have devastated Tokyo and Rio de Janeiro . Max informs Foreign Minister Dekkom about the events and asks him for help to get the "Kill Code". Dekkom then tries to kill Max, and it becomes clear that Dekkom is behind what happened. Max escapes and informs Sarah, who then uses her position in the Secret Service to kidnap President Palma together with Max. On her run from Dekkom's henchmen, Max explains to the President what is going on. After a car chase, Dekkom is finally arrested and reveals that he wants to destroy the enemies of the USA in order to rule the world.

On the space station, the virus initiates a station's self-destruction program. Meanwhile, Jake finds the software developer in charge, Duncan, who smuggled the virus into the station. Duncan tries to shoot Jake, but hits a window and is sucked into space, while Jake was able to leave the room in time and lock it. The space station is eventually evacuated, but Jake stays behind to reboot the system. Max and Sarah bring President Palma to the Kennedy Space Center , where he releases the "kill code" to initiate the restart of the system, which however does not prevent the self-destruction.

When Jake enters the wrong access code for the computer room door, Ute comes to his aid. Together they restart the system and can hand over satellite control to NASA to prevent the geostorm. Shortly before the station is destroyed, both can save themselves in a replacement satellite and are rescued by a shuttle. Six months later, Jake is working on a new, improved space station that will be commissioned under the leadership of an international community.

production

In Geostorm is the feature debut of director Dean Devlin . He had already made a name for himself as a producer and screenwriter. He has already played a key role in films such as Stargate (1994), Independence Day (1996) and Godzilla (1998).

The filming of the film took place in October 2014 in New Orleans , Louisiana . Some scenes were filmed there at the Michoud Assembly Facility , a NASA assembly facility . According to the film magazine The Hollywood Reporter , test screenings of the film in December 2015 showed that the film was not yet ready for cinema. So the budget was increased by 15 million US dollars and re- shoots were carried out. Producer Jerry Bruckheimer and screenwriter Laeta Kalogridis were brought on board for support. Since director Devlin was no longer available for the re-shoots, the Briton Danny Cannon acted as a replacement at short notice . The re-shoots are said to have added completely new characters to the film; others were removed or reoccupied. The Canadian Katheryn Winnick was originally cast for the film, but has now been replaced by another actress.

A few days before the theatrical release of Geostorm in October 2017, the production studio released The Asylum to as Mockbuster turned disaster movie Geo Disaster - You can not escape!

reception

Geostorm received consistently very bad reviews. At Rotten Tomatoes , only 14 of the 88 reviews collected are positive, while the film at Metacritic received a Metascore of 21 percent in 22 reviews.

Filmstarts praises the fact that Geostorm is a "visually appealing disaster thriller", but in which "tension [...] despite the highest level of drama" does not arise and "[t] he subplots that become increasingly outrageous and crude in the course of the film [ …] Ended in a curious countdown ”. For Antje Wessels of Quotenmeter.de is "this technically ambivalent disaster thriller pure boondoggle" and criticized the two screenwriters, which "history as deadly serious thriller drama" staged and the "absurdity of their premise unaware" seemed to be.

Geostorm is also financially below expectations with an estimated production budget of $ 120 million. The film grossed just $ 13.7 million on the opening weekend in the United States and only increased revenue to $ 33 million four weeks after it was released. Although Geostorm was a financial success, especially in China, global box office earnings were around $ 221 million in early January 2018. According to industry figures, however, it would take between $ 300 million and $ 350 million to break even .
