action

The young Winnifred "Winnie" Foster can't stand it with her parents for a long time and flees into the domestic forest when she learns that she is about to be sent to boarding school. While wandering there, she happened to see Jesse Tuck, who was drinking from a small spring at the foot of a tree. Jesse is less than thrilled that Winnie has seen him and tries to drive her away. Before he succeeds, Jesse's brother Miles appears on his horse, grabs the young girl and rides with Winnie to his family home.

Unaware that their daughter escaped of her own volition, Winnie's parents believe in an abduction. You will do everything possible to find the girl. Since there is no evidence of a kidnapping or any other useful lead, Mrs. Foster accuses a man dressed in yellow, whom she had seen talking to Winnie at the gate of her estate the previous evening, to have something to do with the disappearance of her daughter to have. But nobody knows who this strange man is.

After thinking about it for a long time, the Tucks have decided not to let Winnie go home for the time being, as they are afraid she might tell someone about them. The family is surrounded by a secret that nobody should know about. Mae Tuck finds the young woman very likeable, which she clearly shows her. Jesse, Mae's younger son, is also enthusiastic about Winnie, and they spend a lot of time together. Only Miles, the older of the two brothers, is very reserved; he displeases his brother's interest.

When the Fosters are at the police station, they meet the mysterious man in the yellow suit and confront him with their assumption. He strictly denies her allegations about the kidnapping of her daughter, but then surprisingly explains that he has a suspicion where Winnie is and offers his help.

Jesse and Winnie have meanwhile fallen seriously in love with each other, which leads to the fact that Jesse shares the young woman with the secret that surrounds the family. He tells her about the spring at the foot of the tree and what it is all about. Through the power of this water, the entire family has not only become invulnerable, but also immortal. While he's still telling the story, Miles suddenly appears, who at first doesn't agree that Jesse Winnie has confided the secret to the family. But then he sits down and Winnie learns more details of the fate of the Tucks.

The man in yellow has turned up at the Foster's house to negotiate what he'll get for bringing Winnie back to them, because he now knows where she is. For this he demands the entire forest as well as the house of the Fosters. After initial hesitation, Robert Foster accepts his terms. His daughter's life is his top priority.

Miles, Jesse and Winnie go back to Mae and Angus Tuck, who have already packed their things. You have to move on. Just as the young people arrive there, the man in yellow appears and threatens Winnie with a gun. The Tucks don't know how to intervene as there is no way they want Winnie to be endangered. The stranger promises to let the young woman go if the Tucks lead him to the source. Unnoticed, Mae Tuck was able to grab a shovel and hit the man over the head. The blow kills him. At that very moment, Winnie's father shows up with a squad of police officers. Mae and Angus Tuck are arrested, their sons manage to escape.

In vain, Winnie protests time and time again that the Tucks did not kidnap her, she is not believed. Then the night approaches when Jesse and Miles show up at Winnie's and ask her for help. They want to free their parents, who are to be hanged the next day. With the help of Winnie, who uses a ruse, the three actually manage to free Mae and Angus. A getaway car is already waiting to take the family to safety. Winnie cannot fulfill Jesse's request to stay with him and flee with the family, as this would unnecessarily endanger the Tucks. Because everything would be done to find it. So Jesse promises her that he will return when everything has calmed down again. In the meantime, she should go to the source and drink from it in order to achieve immortality as well.

After her grandmother dies, Winnie goes into the woods and the spring, where she pensively runs the water over her hands. She hears the voice of Jesse, who swears his love for her and talks about what else we want to experience together, but also the voice of Angus Tuck, who told her what a burden it could be to be immortal. His advice that she shouldn't be afraid of death but of an unlived life runs through her head.

More than 80 years have passed since Jesse returns to finally get Winnie. When he went to the spring, he found a tombstone with the inscription "In loving memory, Winnifred Foster Jackson, Beloved Woman - Beloved Mother, 1899-1999". Winnie decided against immortality and lived a full life. Jesse, who is still 17 years old, stands in front of her grave.

criticism

"Fantasy story, set at the beginning of the 20th century, which touches upon questions of life and death and the 'curse of immortality' without delving too deeply."

“This Disney remake evokes reflections on transience and love and scores with a prominent cast (including Ben Kingsley, Sissy Spacek and William Hurt). Conclusion: sensitive, atmospheric drama. "
