action

The industrialist and billionaire Damian Hale is the master of his own universe until he is diagnosed with incurable cancer . He finds a business card that will lead him to a certain Dr. Albright leads. This informs him about a radical treatment method called "shedding". Your own consciousness is transferred to an artificially grown, healthy body. Damian opts for this approach and stages his own public death. Albright transfers him to his new body and prescribes pills to soothe the vivid hallucinations that he claims are side effects of the treatment.

Damian starts his new life in New Orleans under the newly adopted name Edward Kidner. There he quickly befriends his neighbor Anton. However, he suffers from re-hallucinations every time he forgets to take his medicine. They are always about the same woman and her child. When Edward Dr. Albright asks about this, tries to calm him down and finally sends him to Hawaii to relax . But Edward researched instead using the images of his hallucinations and discovered a place near St. Louis. Once there, he finds the woman from his hallucinations: Madeline. She recognizes her recently deceased husband Mark in him. Edward learns, much to his horror, that the body he is using was not artificially created, but belongs to another man. He sold it to Albright so that the family finally had enough money to heal their sick daughter.

Edward and Madeline are attacked in the house by Albright's men, led by Anton. Edward and Madeline injure Anton, escape and eventually pick up Madeline's daughter Anna from school before returning to New Orleans. There, Edward is researching the inventor of shedding: Dr. Jensen. Edward realizes he is sharing a tic with Albright and sees Albright as his assistant in the same video. He concludes that Jensen must have transferred himself into Albright's body.

Edward finds Jensen's wife Phyllis in a retirement home and tries to find out something about his studies from her. But because of her Alzheimer's disease , she cannot help him with this either. Edward now lures Albright into the nursing home and confronts him with the situation. Albright leaves more of the medicine to him, revealing that the pills are not really hallucinations, but rather suppress the original personality of the body he possesses. If he continues to take the medicine, Mark's personality will ultimately be obliterated; however, if he stops taking the medicine, Mark will regain control of the body and instead obliterate Edward's personality. When more fighters appear, Edward flees and recognizes in one of them Anton, who has already swapped his body several times.

Finally, Edward manages to kill Albright in his laboratory and to bring Madeline to a safe place with Anna. He himself withdraws to a nearby hotel and manages to extinguish his mind and let Mark take control of the body again. In the end, Mark returns to Madeline and everyone happily embraces each other.
