The film was released in US cinemas on August 29, 2018. The film has been on Netflix's offer since October 3, 2018 .

action

In 1960 a small group of Mossad agents headed by Peter Malkin kidnapped the former German SS-Obersturmbannführer and National Socialist Adolf Eichmann , who was hiding under a false name in Argentina.

background

The SS - Obersturmbannführer Adolf Eichmann organized the expulsion and murder of Jews in the course of the Holocaust during the time of National Socialism and the Second World War as head of the Eichmann department of the Reich Security Main Office (RSHA) and was thus jointly responsible for the murder of an estimated six million people in Europe largely occupied by the German Empire.

After the war, Eichmann took on the new name Clemens or Ricardo Klement and under this name went to Argentina in 1950 by ship. He felt very safe there and even gave interviews. According to the official Israeli interpretation, a later kidnapping of Eichmann is said to have been the sole work of the Mossad. Since Argentina did not have an extradition agreement with Israel at the time, the kidnapped Eichmann was brought directly from Buenos Aires to Israel in an El Al plane on May 22nd. He was disguised as a flight crew member and smuggled past the Argentine airport controls. According to other accounts, Eichmann was first brought to Punta del Este in Uruguay and only handed over to the Mossad there on May 21. Eichmann, who was tried in Israel, was sentenced to death and executed on the night of May 31st, 1962.

Peter Malkin was a member of the Mossad and involved in the kidnapping of Eichmann as a member of the target investigation group. Malkin was born in Pilgramshain as a member of a Jewish family with whom he fled to Palestine in 1936. His sister Fruma and her three children, who stayed behind with 150 other relatives, died during the Holocaust. The Hagana recruited Malkin, 12 years old. Zvi Aharoni , born as Hermann Aronheim in Frankfurt (Oder), was an Israeli Mossad agent and played a key role in the capture of Adolf Eichmann. Isser Harel was the head of the Israeli intelligence service Mossad.

production

Directed by Chris Weitz , the screenplay was written by Matthew Orton . At the premiere in New York, Weitz made it clear that it wasn't just a film about the past or the capture of a Nazi:

“One thing that would be nice would be if everyone applied this film to what is happening in the world today because we are seeing a surge in nationalist, racist and authoritarian political tendencies, and I think it's important to realize that Germany was not unique in the 1930s. It can happen anywhere. "

- Director Chris Weitz : Vogue

The film music was composed by Alexandre Desplat , who started work in spring 2018. The 17-track soundtrack is available for download and on CD from Sony .

In the film, Ben Kingsley plays Adolf Eichmann, head of the organization of the expulsion and deportation during the Second World War . Oscar Isaac , an American actor of Guatemalan origin, took on the role of Peter Malkin , the Israeli actor Lior Raz plays his boss at Mossad Isser Harel , and Michael Aronov plays his Mossad colleague Zvi Aharoni . The actress Haley Lu Richardson took on the character Sylvia Hermann, who quietly and secretly helps the Mossad to confirm Eichmann's identity. Alexandre Desplat's daughter Antonia Desplat can be seen in the film in the supporting role of Dvora. The German actor Rainer Reiners plays the Hessian attorney general Fritz Bauer, who at the time gave the Mossad decisive information about the capture and condemnation of Eichmann after extradition to the Federal Republic had shown itself to be hopeless.

Filming began on October 1, 2017 in Argentina, the country where Eichmann was arrested by the Mossad.

On August 15, 2018, the film was shown at the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington. A first idea of surgery finals in New York took place the following day at the Lincoln Center . reception

“In the fictional conversations between Peter Malkin and Adolf Eichmann, who is played by Ben Kingsley, there is only rudimentary anxiety. Too much equipment - the men look like they are dressed in ' Mad Men ' costumes - and too much reliant on chases and agent action, 'Operation Finale' gains hardly any depth of field in addition to conveying (fictitiously supplemented) event history. [...] The Eichmann trial was a historic novelty, important and illuminating at the same time. To prepare one's prerequisites as a purely adventurous hussar piece only has a certain amount of merit. "
