Aimee Mullins is the daughter of Irish immigrants and has two younger brothers. After giving birth, she was diagnosed with a rare malformation, fibular hemimelia : she was born without fibula . Because of this malformation, her legs could not bear her body weight, so that both of her lower legs below the knees were amputated in infancy . That's why she had to rely on prostheses since childhood.

In the late 1990s, Mullins modeled a collection designed by the British designer Alexander McQueen for the French fashion house Givenchy . She wore bizarre hand-carved wooden boots. Their presence sparked heated controversy and the fashion world was appalled. Contemporary media such as the Süddeutsche Zeitung believed they were walking a tightrope between shock and chic, while the French daily Le Figaro spoke of "exploitation". Nevertheless, she advanced to a highly paid and sought-after top model.

In 2002 Mullins made her debut as an actress in Matthew Barney's art film Cremaster 3 , u. a. as a cheetah woman. Further film and television assignments followed.

In 2007 she took part in the "h2.0 Symposium" of the MIT Media Lab , which researches in the field of cybernetic prosthetics . The extreme climber Hugh Herr , who was also amputated on both legs, demonstrated high-tech prostheses he had developed in the Media Lab on a climbing wall.
