action

Jacob Portman, called Jake, is 15 years old and an isolated outsider at his school when he watches his grandfather Abraham, called Abe, die. He finds him fatally injured one night in the dark forest behind his house. Where before his grandfather's eyes are now only two dark holes; someone has robbed him of his eyeballs. Abe gives his grandson with the last of his strength the order to travel to the island in Wales , to which he had fled during the Second World War , and there to look for a certain Miss Peregrine. Jacob saw a gigantic figure in the forest. The official result of the investigation is that his grandfather was mutilated by a dog. His parents send Jacob to see the psychiatrist Dr. Golan. Jacob remembers the stories his grandfather told him about the island he claims to have lived on with many other children, all of whom had extraordinary abilities. His father thinks the stories are just fantastic embellishments of his father's actual war experiences. Jacob persuades his parents to be allowed to visit the island with his father, on which his grandfather lived in an orphanage, where he found shelter on his escape from the Nazis and the Holocaust.

When Jacob arrives there, the building destroyed by an aerial bomb has long since become an abandoned ruin. Here, however, he meets the young Emma, who takes him into a time warp that leads them into 1943, when Miss Peregrine's orphanage was still a haven for special children. The children living there really have special skills, as his grandfather had reported. So Jacob gets to know the invisible Millard Nullings and the little Bronwyn Buntley, who has superhuman powers. Fiona Frauenfeld can control plants and Olive Abroholos Elephanta has fire in her fingertips and therefore has to wear long, black gloves so as not to ignite everything she touches. The masked twins never speak, but they have telepathic abilities and can petrify people. Hugh Apiston has a beehive in his stomach, Claire Densmore also hides a wide mouth with sharp teeth on the back of her head, Horace Somusson can look into the future in his dreams and show these others in projections, and Enoch O'Connor, who is his room below the roof can bring non-living objects to life. Jacob is particularly impressed by Emma's abilities, as she can control the air and the weather. It is also lighter than air and therefore has to wear black, lead-heavy boots or tie itself to a leash if it does not want to fly away.

The time loop that Miss Peregrine can create with her special powers and with a pocket watch conserves time. The loop preserves the past 24 hours so residents can always stay at Miss Peregrine's orphanage . Miss Peregrine takes off again and again on September 3, 1943, just before the house is hit by the bomb dropped by a German plane. She protects her from an invading monster that she kills with her crossbow, and helps the children develop and control their skills, as she learned from Ms. Avocet, her former teacher who, in another time warp, is Miss Avocet's Home for Peculiar Children operates.

Despite their supernatural powers, the orphans fear being killed by the Hollowgasts, or Hollows for short. These long-legged, eyeless humanoid creatures murder children and target their eyeballs, because only by eating enough of them can the invisible shadowy beings regain their former human form. You have already killed Bronwyn's brother, Victor. The Hollows have been chased on them by Mr. Barron, a mad scientist with shapeshifter skills who hunts children for their eyes and their protector for their powers. Because only Jacob can see the Hollows, which is his special ability, he becomes the children's last hope when Barron follows Jacob through the time warp and takes Miss Peregrine into his power. Emma has created another retreat next to Miss Peregrine's orphanage and shows Jacob her hiding place, which is in a sunken express steamer , the RMS Augusta lying on the ocean floor.

The special children must combine their strengths in the fight against the Hollows when Ms. Avocet is killed by a hollow. Emma lets the ocean liner appear, which has been lying on the ocean floor for a long time, Enoch brings an army of skeletons to life from her passengers, and together they go into a successful battle against Barron and his helpers at the fair on Blackpool Pier . Barron takes the form of Jacob, but is eventually killed by a hollow himself.

The children have to return to their own time, to 1943, in order not to be overtaken by their years. Jacob has saved his grandfather by intervening in the past; he tells him to return to the children. After months of time travel from loop to loop, he finds his way back on the ship to his beloved Emma and the special children.

Literary template and staff

The first volume of a four-part bestseller series by the American writer Ransom Riggs served as a template for the film . His debut novel Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children was published in 2011 and was published in 2013 in a German translation with the title The island of special children . The novel has been translated into 40 languages and adapted for the film by screenwriter Jane Goldman . Goldman exchanged personal characteristics and gave the children some skills that differed from the novel. So Emma can light and control fire with her hands and not the air. Goldman most recently worked as a screenwriter for the last two X-Men films, X-Men: The Future Is Past and X-Men: First Choice . The character of Mr. Barron is mainly based on various characters from the book, but does not appear in the form shown in the film.

The director took over Tim Burton . Peter Chernin , one of the producers of the film, instinctively viewed Burton as the perfect director to film the novel because of his ability to put his signature on a dark object, a mixture of whimsy and humor that amazed. Chernin believes that not only adults but also older children have been used to darker stories since the later Harry Potter films.

Regarding the characters in the novel, Burton said he found them as convincing as those in old horror films . They also all have a story and ask a lot of questions to the viewer. The book had elements of a folk tale or a fable , Burton said, and if you go back in time, it was fairy tales that told the terrible stories. They are like dreams that even as an adult one cannot process intellectually, which is the interesting thing about the power of fairy tales. Even if people wanted to see children endowed with superpowers, as described in the book, Burton said he still endowed them with a grief, which consists in the fact that they feel different from others and actually don't think they are great at all.

Riggs, who describes himself as a lifelong fan of the director, said Burton's previous work had a creative impact on his book. When Riggs later visited a film location in Belgium, he said that the Torenhof Castle there, which served as a backdrop for the eponymous orphanage in the film, was very similar to how he had imagined it. In addition, Burton took the ideas he had in the novel and made them bigger and very dynamic.

Asa Butterfield played the lead role of Jacob Portman in the film. As a 10-year-old Jacob is portrayed by Aiden Flowers and as a 6-year-old by Nicholas Oteri . Ella Purnell plays Emma Bloom, who Jacob first met on the island. Eva Green can be seen in the role of Miss Peregrine, the director of the orphanage. The other children living with her are played by Milo Parker (Hugh Apiston), Raffiella Chapman (Claire Densmore), Lauren McCrostie (Olive Abroholos Elephanta), Pixie Davies (Bronwyn Buntley), Finlay MacMillan (Enoch O'Connor), Hayden Keeler- Stone (Horace Somusson), Cameron King (Millard Nullings) and Georgia Pemberton (Fiona Frauenfeld). The masked brothers are played by twins Joseph and Thomas Odwell . Chris O'Dowd took on the role of Jacob's father Franklin Portman and Terence Stamp the role of his grandfather Abraham Portman. Samuel L. Jackson plays the white-eyed Barron in the film.

Burton said about the casting of Miss Peregrine with Eva Green, who is the title heroine in English, she was perfect for the role. Burton compares Miss Peregrine to the weird Mary Poppins , but says she is an even stranger version of that, and there was only one person he could see in the role. The name Peregrine is derived from the Latin word "peregrinus", which translates as "foreign, foreign, stranger", but is also the scientific name of the peregrine falcon . For such a Miss Peregrine that one can Syndrigasti is in the film and in the book transform what is her second special ability in addition to the manipulation of time. This ability of the character, according to Green, was one of the reasons for her to take on the role, and it was fun for her to use it in the film for the benefit of the children and thus even to kill to protect them. In addition, Miss Peregrine is proficient in handling a heavy crossbow .

British actress Judi Dench took on the role of Miss Avocet, Miss Peregrine's former teacher who can also manipulate time. Miss Avocet may prove Ymbryne and Syndrigast in a avocet (in English Avocet transform). The occasionally terrifying lady is the headmistress of Miss Avocet's Home for Peculiar Children . Dench was already 81 years old while filming.

Filming and accompanying works

Filming began in February 2015 in London and the Tampa Bay Area . In the southern United States, the film was shot in Harbor Bluffs near Belleair Beach and later in Sun City Center in Hillsborough County and Pinellas County in Florida. In addition to London, the shooting took place on the Roseland Peninsula in Portholland , a peninsula in Cornwall , where the place was turned into a Welsh village. The village of Portholland, which has just 40 inhabitants, was transformed into the fictional village of Cairnholm for the film. For this purpose, in addition to a few shops and a post office, the backdrops for a cemetery and a pub that bears the name Priest Hole were built . Further pictures were taken on the beach and on the cliffs of Portholland. Further recordings were made in the nearby village of Minions, in the high moorland of Bodmin Moor . This is where the recordings were made showing the access to Miss Peregrine's time warp, which is hidden inside a cave. In the film, Oggie, a native of Cairnholm, falls from a cliff on a Cornish beach, and it is there that the shots of Emma and Jacob diving to the RMS Augusta, a sunken passenger ship, were made .

In early May 2015, filming continued on the promenade in the English coastal town of Blackpool . The North Pier and nearby buildings served as a backdrop. At the foot of the Blackpool Tower is the Circus Gallery, which can be seen in the film. Still, the 1940s-style pier was used to build the front view of the Ghost Train , which in the film is part of an amusement park and serves as access to Miss Avocet's time warp. While filming in Blackpool, Burton, who is making a cameo there, was injured and had to be rushed to hospital.

The Torenhof Castle in the Belgian municipality of Brasschaat near Antwerp served as the filming location for the orphanage from which it was named, Miss Peregrine's Home for special children . All daylight photos were taken there, including those in which Miss Peregrine introduced Jacob to the garden and the children. The building, which is now vacant, is characterized by stylistic elements from the Neo-Renaissance and is the former residence of the biscuit manufacturer Edouard Jacobus De Beukelaer . Film recordings were also made in Antwerp, Belgium's largest port city.

A few weeks before the film premiered, the Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation published a companion book to the film entitled The Art of Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children . Written by Leah Gallo , with a foreword by Ransom Riggs and an introduction by Tim Burton , the book contains a number of photos of the props, locations and film sets in Belgium and England.

Costumes and post production

The costume design comes from Colleen Atwood , who has already won three Academy Awards for her work , including 2011 for the film Alice in Wonderland , and also with Burton for the films Edward Scissorhands and Sweeney Todd - The Devilish Barber of the Fleet Street had worked together. The book accompanying the film contains some background information on her work. Many of the costumes were given in their basic design by the descriptions in the book and their illustrations. Atwood said that by designing the costume, you create a character that drives the plot. Burton imagined that every single character in the film should be easy to recognize, and quite deliberately wanted them to always wear the same clothes to reinforce this effect. Millard Nullings can be recognized in the film by his hat, and the Bone brothers both wear the same Pierrot costumes and additional masks that hide their facial expressions. For Emma's costume, Atwood created heavy, ornate metal boots that keep her on the ground in the film and look as if they came from the first half of the 20th century. In contrast to the costumes of the children, Miss Peregrine and a few other Ymbrynes, which were mostly based on the fashion of the 1940s, Mr. Barron as the villain wears a suit and a tie that are supposed to look more modern, says Atwood.

When designing the costumes, later post-processing of the film material was taken into account. For example, Atwood brought elements into Miss Peregrine's costume that, although not ostensibly reminiscent of a bird, simplified the later work on the CGI . The tapering shoulders of Miss Peregrine's costume turn into a peregrine falcon through post-processing into its wings.

Compared to Burton's earlier films, the use of CGI technology was generally rather sparse and was mainly limited to the transformation processes of the characters and the representations of the hollow guests and skeletons in the film. The criticism of Burton's previous films was that they were too CGI-heavy and soulless, and the emotions seemed cold and artificial, especially for his last and lowest-rated film Alice in Wonderland: Behind the Looking Glass.

Film music

The score was composed by Michael Higham and Matthew Margeson . Tim Davies was the conductor for the orchestral recording .

The movie's theme song is called Wish That You Were Here , but it wasn't featured on the soundtrack released in October 2016. The 6:42 min long song, with harp sounds among other things , was sung by Florence Welch , recorded by Florence + The Machine and released in advance as a download by Republic Records on August 26, 2016 . A 30-second trailer for the film, which was presented at the same time, was also accompanied by this song. Welch said of her work for the film: “On tour I often lived in a magical time bubble.” According to Musikexpress , the song develops from a soft keyboard melody to a crescendo with a powerful chorus. Welch, who has been a long-time admirer of Burton's work, said they had a very similar sensitivity, and it was that kind of dark romance in Burton's films that was so beautiful and whimsical that she tried to achieve in her music too.

Before the film premiere, a 2:09 min long music video for the song Wish That You Were Here was released in September 2016 , in which individual film scenes that had not previously been shown in trailers are presented and various photos scanned by the camera come to life.

The film also features the equally modern songs Supermarket by John Anthony , 30 Minute Love Affair by Paloma Faith and BeatBoxing by Tom Higham , the latter alluding to a theme referred to in the story, namely the teenagers native to Cairnholm Worm and Dylan practice beatboxing as a hobby . In addition, the late 1930s jazz piece In the Mood by Glenn Miller , the 1920s song Run Rabbit Run by Flanagan and Allen and a passage from Tchaikovsky's 1st Piano Concerto from 1874 are played.

The song New World Coming , with which the trailers released in March and June 2016 were backed, was written by Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil and was originally made famous by Mama Cass Elliot in the early 1970s . The Icelandic singer Dísa Jakobsdóttir sang it for the trailer for the film. The text line to be heard in it “There's a new world coming. And it's just around the bend. ”Translates as“ There is a new world. And it's just around the corner. ”The song refers to the time loops used in the film, through which you can reach Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children , but also the other orphanages for special children, which represent a completely new world for Jacob .

In December 2016, the soundtrack was included in the list of candidates (longlist) at the Academy Awards 2017 in the category Best Film Music , from which the members of the Academy determine the official nominations. The song Wish That You Were Here on the soundtrack was included in the longlist for Best Movie Song .

The soundtrack to the film, Miss Peregrine's Home For Peculiar Children Original Motion Picture Score , includes 21 songs and was released on October 7, 2016 by La-La Land Records.

In a trailer published on September 20, 2016, Emma shows Jacob, who is still completely fascinated by her abilities, about her secret hiding place, which is in a ship lying on the ocean floor. In a featurette presented the following day by 20th Century Fox, various actors commented on the film and the collaboration with Burton.

reception

Age rating

In Germany the film is FSK 12. The reason for the release states: “The film tells a story about friendship, solidarity and the search for one's own identity that is easy to understand even for young viewers. A clear distinction must be made between good and bad. Although individual threatening images can frighten children under the age of 12, 12-year-olds are able to place them in the context of the narrative and the genre. "

Reviews

The film won over 65 percent of Rotten Tomatoes ' critics . In general, it says that Burton, as a filmmaker with a clear, distinctive style and attention to detail, is appropriate for the material, and especially his work with the child actors should be highlighted, according to Manohla Dargis of the New York Times .

The characters appearing in the film, but primarily the special children, were repeatedly compared by critics with the characters from the Harry Potter films and from the X-Men series , but also with those of the Addams Family . According to Devan Coggan of Entertainment Weekly , the heroic, crazy guys in the film need a little more heart and the monsters sharper teeth to stand up to the comparison with the other characters that Burton himself created . Daniel Kothenschulte from the Frankfurter Rundschau puts it this way: "There is no emotional arc that always grounded Burton's early outsider stories at all show values."

After the release of a trailer in June 2016, Marcel Morant from Musikexpress said: "The story is fresh, the look is innovative and the CGI effects fit in well with the rural idyll."

Although details of the film were only known from trailers, videos from the locations and set photos, critics such as Scott Feinberg of The Hollywood Reporter considered the visual effects of the film, the production design by Gavin Bocquet and the costume design by Colleen Atwood for Oscar even before it opened in theaters. worthy .

Benjamin Moldenhauer of Spiegel Online believes that fans who are still upset because of the unsuccessful film adaptation of Alice in Wonderland: Behind the Mirrors , in which Burton was the producer, could reconcile with the director through the film. Moldenhauer compares the Hollows in the film with the Sandman in the story of the same name by ETA Hoffmann , a monster that rips out children's eyes, and adds that both terrible and illicit beauty are hidden in the intermediate world presented in the film, which is removed from the present Magic, as always with Burton films, is reserved for the excluded and border crossers.

Peter Debruge of Variety says Jane Goldman's consistently amusing screenplay is the secret ingredient that so suitable make the film special for Burton's sensibility and it enables, motifs and themes rediscover his previous work and expand it.

The cast of Miss Peregrine with Eva Green was generally highlighted by critics, who was convincing in her role and with her sparkling eyes and her threatening smile was perfect for it.

Mark Kennedy of the Associated Press says the film has everything a super-franchise is all about, listing a blow of fate and the creation of a hero as well as dealing with the monster within us. Pete Hammond from Deadline is of the opinion that the film is a good start to a possible film series. Hartwig Tegeler from Deutschlandfunk, on the other hand, hopes, although he counts The Island of Special Children to one of Burton's best films, that this special film about special children is not the start of a film series so that it remains special, unique.

Gross profit

In North American cinemas, the film grossed 28.9 million US dollars on its opening weekend, which was higher than the initial assessments of critics had expected and it landed at number 1 on the cinema charts. The film was particularly well received by the younger audience. It also landed at number 1 in Mexico, where the film started at the same time, and also in Australia, Russia, South Korea and Thailand. Overall, the film grossed $ 66.3 million on its weekend launch, more than half of its production cost, which was $ 110 million. The film's worldwide revenue was $ 297 million in March 2017. in Germany the film had 861,150 admissions.
