history

DeBeukelaer

Share of 100 francs from De Beukelaer's Fabrieken from February 24, 1929

In 1850 Edouard de Beukelaer started making biscuits. 20 years later he opened the first biscuit factory in Belgium and invented the double biscuit . He named it Le Petit Prince fourré ( the little stuffed prince ) in honor of the heir to the Belgian throne . DeBeukelaer was represented with a stand for the first time at the Antwerp World Exhibition in 1894 . Six years later the company became a public company .

The son of the company founder set up the Flemish biscuit factory E. de Beukelaer in Kempen on the Lower Rhine in 1955 . The double biscuit, which was given the brand name Prinzen Rolle in 1964, has been made here ever since .

The long-standing connections between the three large Belgian biscuit factories DeBeukelaer , Parein and Victoria led to a merger in 1965 , creating the General Biscuit Company . With plants in Belgium, Germany, Great Britain , Italy and Congo-Kinshasa, it was one of the largest in Belgium. In 1986 it came into the possession of BSN-Gervais-Danone , which later became part of the Danone group.

Griesson

In 1892 Anton Gottlieb Gries founded a bakery on Peterstrasse in Kobern on the Moselle . He had previously completed an apprenticeship in Nuremberg . Hans Gries joined his father's company in 1918 with his brother Anton. This changed its name from now on as GA Gries & Söhne . In 1924, Hans Gries founded the Griesson company . In 1928 he opened his own gingerbread factory in Kobern. Machines were first used in 1938 to flatten the dough and press it into shapes.

After the death of Hans Gries in 1966, the third generation took over the management with his son Heinz Gries . In 1969 he opened a new factory in Polch . In 1979, two years after Griesson brought out the Soft Cake , the company headquarters moved from Kobern to Polch. In the first decade under the direction of Heinz Gries, the company also developed a year-round range, thereby ending its dependence on the seasonal gingerbread business. In the decades that followed, Heinz Gries strived for consistent technology and cost leadership.

In 1993 a plant was set up in Kahla , Thuringia . In 1997, Griesson also took a 50 percent stake in Tekrum ( Ravensburg ).

Griesson - de Beukelaer

In 1998 Andreas Land joined Griesson. In addition to Heinz Gries, he acted as managing director, at the same time he acquired five percent of the company's shares. On March 1, 1999, Griesson merged with part of the Danone Group, the pastry division General Biscuit Germany and General Biscuit Austria (DeBeukelaer) , to form Griesson - de Beukelaer GmbH & Co. KG. Heinz Gries and Andreas Land initially held 60% of the company shares , Danone 40%. From now on, the new company managed the Griesson brand as well as the brands brought in by Danone such as DeBeukelaer , Prinzen Rolle and LEICHT & CROSS .

In the years that followed, the company expanded. This included the continued expansion of the Polch plant in 2002 - from 1969 to 2004 it experienced 30 expansion stages - and in 2004 the commissioning of a logistics center in Koblenz . Griesson - de Beukelaer took over the remaining company shares (50%) from Tekrum with retroactive effect from January 1, 2005 . A year later, the company entered the license business with Mövenpick Holding AG ; Griesson - de Beukelaer used these licenses until 2012. In 2007 Heinz Gries and Andreas Land acquired the remaining 40 percent of the company. In March of the following year, Griesson - de Beukelaer took over Wurzener Dauerbackwaren GmbH ( Wurzen ) from Stollwerck ( Cologne ).

Heinz Gries resigned as managing director of the company at the turn of the year 2008/2009. In 2012, the company's sales exceeded half a billion euros (508 million euros) for the first time, around 45 percent of which was generated abroad. In 2014, Heinz Gries brought his majority stake in the family business to a family foundation he had set up ( Gottlieb Anton Foundation ).

With effect from January 1, 2017, the plant in Ravensburg was sold to the Swiss company Kambly .

The company was part of a working group of the Association of Conditions of the Confectionery Association, against which the Federal Cartel Office imposed fines in 2013. The appeal of the members of this so-called confectionery cartel was dismissed, the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court upheld the decision and increased the penalties for Griesson - de Beukelaer to seven million euros. The judgment is not yet final, an appeal at the Federal Court of Justice is possible.

On November 16, 2018, the company announced that it would close the factory in Kempen, which has existed since 1955 and employ around 270 people, by 2020 and that production and a. of the Prinzen Rolle completely to the location in Kahla in Thuringia. The reason for this is the lack of expansion opportunities at the Kempen location. Around 100 million euros are being invested in Kahla.
