The German Packaging Prize is an international, cross-sector and cross-material performance competition, the aim of which is to award and promote future-oriented solutions and developments for packaging. It is awarded in five categories every year by an independent jury. Winning the award also qualifies you for participation in the “WorldStar” competition organized by the World Packaging Organization .

The German Packaging Prize is under the patronage of the Federal Minister for Economics and Research and is organized by the German Packaging Institute .

history

The German Packaging Award was founded in 1963 by the Advisory Board of the Packaging Rationalization Association (RGV). The RGV wanted to promote the innovative strength of the industry with a performance show.

The 1st German packaging competition took place as part of the 3rd interpack trade fair. 256 competition samples were submitted. The winners included the “vacuum packaging with a water-vapor, aroma and light-proof lining” for powdered mashed potatoes from Pfanni , the “sheet metal can with a practical, consumer-friendly pouring spout” for cooking oil from Livio, and the “pack for the electrical from Braun and designer Wolfgang Schmittel Razor ", which is" display and sales packaging, travel case and storage container at the same time ".

Companies from various industries have participated in the competition since 1963. Well-known companies include, for example, the Henkel Group, Tetra Pak , Bayer AG , Siemens AG , C. Josef Lamy GmbH , InBev , Beiersdorf AG , Unilever , Adidas , Amcor Flexibles Europe & Amricas , Panther Packaging , Rexam , Dr. August Oetker KG or Rügenwalder Mühle . For smaller companies or individuals, winning a German Packaging Award was also the starting point for successful work in the packaging industry.

The competition has been carried out by the German Packaging Institute since 1996.

The German Packaging Prize makes inventions and new developments visible to the public and promotes the quality standard through a critical and expert assessment . The German Packaging Prize is aimed at national and international participants from the packaging industry and the consumer goods industry. Participants are designers , developers, manufacturers and users of packaging materials , packaging , individual, collective and display packs. The “Machine Technology” category is aimed at manufacturers of packaging machines and technical modules for the manufacture of packaging. Special “young talent prizes” can be awarded in each category. The young talent award honors special packaging solutions from students, trainees and schoolchildren.

The packaging solutions submitted are evaluated according to binding criteria:

The jury describes itself as independent and non-partisan. It is made up of experts from professional associations and the packaging industry. All jury members are named and presented on the website of the German Packaging Award. The specialist jury is supported by a public panel of experts proposed by the specialist associations of the packaging industry.

The number of entries is not limited. Individual participants can submit multiple papers. Participation is chargeable. Reduced rates apply to the young talent award.

The award winners are awarded in a two-stage process. In the first stage, the jury sifts through and tests all entries and evaluates them based on the criteria mentioned above. As a result, it publicly awards a circle of nominees. In the second stage, the nominees will be selected and awarded the prize for packaging. The awarding of the German Packaging Prize takes place without any ranking. A reason is given for each award. The prize consists of a trophy and a certificate. It is awarded at an event.
