Design of the Prinzen Rolle double biscuit (2013)

The Prinzen Rolle is a double biscuit filled with cocoa cream , which is manufactured by the Griesson - de Beukelaer company. The biscuit consists of two round biscuits with a layer of chocolate cream between them . The Prinzen Rolle is one of the long-life baked goods due to the two firmly baked wheat biscuits . One prince roll contains 23 sandwich biscuits. Originally from de Beukelaer, the Prinzen Rolle has been sold under this brand since the merger with Griesson.

history

According to the manufacturer, the history of the Prinzen Rolle goes back to the 19th century. The biscuit originally comes from Belgium , where it is said to have been invented by master baker Edouard de Beukelaer.

De Beukelaer had been making biscuits in his bakery since the 1850s and had learned his trade in England and Antwerp . From this apprenticeship he also brought with him the knowledge of the production of dry and durable biscuits, of a kind that was previously not known in Belgium. Up until that point in time, biscuits and cakes were still considered expensive and unstable products that the general public could rarely afford.

After his return from England, de Beukelaer researched his own biscuit recipes, which he made with a semi-automatic biscuit machine he had brought with him from England, the first machine of its kind on mainland Europe. With this machine as a basis, he finally founded the first larger biscuit factory in Belgium in 1870 and developed the double biscuit. The original name of the Prinzen Rolle was the French "le petit prince fourré" (Stuffed Prince), allegedly in honor of the Belgian prince to the throne Leopold II (1835-1909).

The prince depicted on both sides of the biscuit has changed over the course of time from what was initially a more traditional image of a young prince, with a feathered hat and biscuit in hand, to a “young” and “more dynamic” image of a prince. For the manufacturer, the crest-like imprint is a “ seal of quality ” for the double biscuit.

In 1955 the son of the biscuit manufacturer de Beukelaer built a branch in Kempen on the Lower Rhine as the "Flemish biscuit factory E. de Beukelaer" and thus continued the tradition. Over 60,000 tons of sweet pastries from the de Beukelaer company come from this factory, which has the longest ovens in Europe for the production of biscuits. Prince rolls are still made there today.

In 1969 the Griesson company from Kobern-Gondorf built another plant in Polch in Rhineland-Palatinate. It was founded by Heinz Gries, who had taken over the management of the company two years earlier. In 1979 the Griesson company moved its administrative headquarters from Kobern to the Polch plant.

In 1999 Griesson merged with the General Biscuit Company Germany and Austria to form Griesson - de Beukelaer GmbH & Co. KG . Initially, the French food manufacturer Danone also held a 40% stake in the company. Since 2007 the group has been completely family-owned again in the pastry production.

Since April 2011, the Prinzen Rolle brand has been owned by the Kraft Foods Group , now Mondelēz International . Griesson - de Beukelaer owns the licensing rights of the brand.

Manufacturing

In Germany, Griesson - de Beukelaer still primarily produces the sandwich biscuit at its Kempen plant. Production is to be gradually relocated to the Kahla plant in Thuringia by 2020 . The Belgian parent company de Beukelaer, which has since been taken over by Mondelēz International, continues to produce a double biscuit under the LU Prince label . LU does not supply the German and Austrian markets directly, but indirectly via Milka products with biscuits in this sales area. Milka (also Mondelēz International) sells a sandwich under the name Milka Choco Pause .

Since 2009, Griesson - de Beukelaer has refrained from adding hydrogenated fats and artificial flavors to the Prinzen Rolle. In 2011, the Öko-Test magazine gave the product an overall rating of “Good”. Since July 2012, the company has also been using only cocoa with UTZ certification for sustainable production for all branded products, including all variants of the Prinzen Rolle .

advertising

The Prinzen Rolle was first advertised in 1955. Even then she was made known on television. Since 2007, the national soccer player Lukas Podolski has appeared as an advertising face for the chocolate double biscuit. In order to make the biscuit more attractive to the young audience, the group uses social networks such as Facebook .

In the “Food Hotel” in Neuwied , which equips its rooms in a supermarket ambience, there is a “Prinzen Rolle room”. In addition to tables with storage space in a double biscuit look, there are also cushions in the form of biscuit packaging and posters depicting the Prinzen Rolle.
