Jaffa Cakes or just Jaffa is a biscuit that originated in Great Britain and was made by the British biscuit maker McVitie & Price Ltd in 1927 . was introduced. McVitie's is now a brand of the British biscuit manufacturer United Biscuits . Their invention is largely attributed to John Langlands, then director of McVitie & Price . The pastry was after from Jaffa coming Jaffa oranges named.

Jaffa Cakes are circular and 54 millimeters in diameter. They consist of three layers: a biscuit base , a layer of flavored orange jellies, and a dark chocolate coating. There are also product variations with other flavors.

The lack of clarity as to whether Jaffa Cakes are to be classified as biscuits or cakes and are accordingly subject to a different calculation of British sales tax was judged in favor of the manufacturer McVitie's . The expert opinion recognized that the consumption of Jaffa cakes was similar to that of biscuits, but saw clear characteristics of cakes in the composition and consistency of the sponge cake; no Value Added Tax has to be paid in Great Britain - classified as a biscuit, it would be 20 percent.

Jaffa Cakes are now offered by various manufacturers, such as Messino from Bahlsen , Soft Cake from Griesson or PiM’s from LU .
