The company was founded in 1948 through the merger of the two Scottish family businesses McVitie & Price (brands: McVities, Jaffa Cakes ) and MacFarlane Lang . In 1960 Crawford's Biscuits and MacDonald's Biscuits were taken over, in 1967 the crisp manufacturer Meredith & Drew , 1968 the nut producer Kenyon Son & Craven , 1974 the cookie and cracker manufacturer Keebler Company in the USA (sold again in 1995). The confectionery producer Terry's of York was added in 1982, but was sold to Kraft Suchard in 1993 . In 1988 the British frozen products manufacturer Ross Young’s was acquired and a 60% stake in UB China (increased to 90% in 1991). The Dutch biscuit and confectionery brand Verkade was taken over in 1990. The following year, UB invested in Fazer Biscuits in Finland , Oxford Biscuits in Denmark and Gyõri Keksz in Hungary, and a joint venture was established in Ireland. In 1993, The Smith's Snackfood Company and its Italian subsidiary were taken over in Australia . Derwent Valley Foods (brand: Phileas Fogg) was bought on the British Isles, and the stakes in Oxford Biscuits and Gyõri Keksz were increased to 100%. The stake in the Finnish Fazer Biscuits was increased to 70% in 1994 , 90% of the shares in the Polish biscuit manufacturer San were acquired, and Nibb-It Snacks was taken over in the Netherlands . In 1995 UB bought the Australian Original Pretzel Company , in 1996 the Spanish biscuit brand Galletas Fontaneda , in 1997 the French Biscuiterie Nantaise (BN) was taken over from PepsiCo , for which PepsiCo gave several companies in continental Europe and The Smith's Snackfood Company in Australia. In 1998 Campbell Soup sold Delacre, a pastry maker active in Belgium, France, the Netherlands and Germany for £ 125 million to UB. In Japan, UB took over half of the Meiji McVitie joint venture previously held by Meiji and renamed this subsidiary to UB Japan . In 1999, Ross Young's seafood division merged with Legal & General Ventures Bluecrest to form the UK's largest seafood company, Young's Bluecrest (now Young's Seafood ); UB and LGV each received 44% of the shares. In September 1999 UB took over Stollwerck's Hungarian business , and Stollwerck became the exclusive sales partner in Germany. In October, UB sold the refrigerated and frozen food business to HJ Heinz , and the refrigerated fish division to Northern Foods (today part of the 2 Sisters Food Group ) in November .
