history

Nabisco's founding dates back to the 1890s , a decade in which large-scale bakeries merged. At the beginning of the decade, regional bakeries in the United States merged. The Chicago's American Biscuit and Manufacturing Company was created from the merger of 40 bakeries in the Midwest, the East founded seven bakeries the New York Biscuit Company and other companies joined the United States Baking Company together. These three companies with their 114 bakeries merged in 1898 to form the National Biscuit Company , based in New York City .

The National Biscuit Company first used the abbreviation Nabisco in 1901 as a brand name for a type of biscuit. The red, triangular company logo was designed in 1952. The company name was changed to Nabisco in 1972. Until then, the food company was often referred to as NBC . This abbreviation has no relation to the television station NBC and the antenna- like symbol in the logo also seems to be a coincidence.

NBC took over the Shredded Wheat Company (maker of Triscuit and Shredded Wheat cereal products) and Christie, Brown & Company (from Toronto ) in 1928 , and three years later the FH Bennett Company (maker of milk-bone dog biscuits). In 1981 Nabisco merged with Standard Brands (manufacturer of Planters nuts) and acquired the confectionery manufacturer LifeSavers .

1985 Nabisco was by Reynolds American Inc. bought out and went into the possession of in 2000, Philip Morris Companies Inc. over. This company acquisition was approved by the Federal Trade Commission on the condition that it divest five product areas (powder for gelatine desserts , ready-made pudding products, non-baked desserts, peppermint candies and baking powder ). The remaining product areas of Nabisco were incorporated as a subsidiary of Kraft Foods, which until 2007 also belonged to Philip Morris and which now operates outside North America as Mondelēz International.
