Return to Me - A second chance for love (Original title: Time Freak ) is an American science fiction - film drama from the year 2018 with Asa Butterfield and Sophie Turner in the lead roles. The film romance was directed by Andrew Bowler , who had already implemented the material in the 2011 Oscar-nominated short film Time Freak .
action
The film is about the physics student Stillman, who was left by his girlfriend Debbie. Stillman then builds a time machine and tries, together with his roommate Evan, to find out why Debbie left him and how he can reverse her decision. While the two go through the best and worst moments of the relationship and change the course several times, the app that Stillman uses to control the time machine keeps on waiting for system crashes.
At a campfire party, which Stillman sees as the decisive failure in his love affair with Debbie, it is completely impossible for him to travel back with the time machine, which is why he has to correct the event correctly the first time. By simply being spontaneous, he also succeeds in that and the two are sent back to the starting point. The time machine doesn't even exist there because he never had to build it. Debbie is still with him, but on his birthday he fears that after an overreaction on his part, he will mess up the relationship again.
He builds the time machine again. Now the plot jumps a bit into the future. Debbie and Stillman got married and he always bent everything with his time machine in such a way that the two never quarrel. This fact is also slowly becoming apparent to Debbie, and she finds it strange. She wonders if something is wrong with her. Stillman seeks advice from his friend Evan and admits that he has built a second time machine and is using it all the time. Debbie suggests that Stillman have a child together. Evan, who has been using the new time machine all along, tries to stop Stillman from destroying the time machine. Debbie joins the argument and learns about the time machine.
Stillman decides to go back in time and make sure that everything never happens. At the last moment Evan jumps into the time machine, while Debbie stays behind crying. Evan tries to get Stillman to rebuild the machine at first, but eventually gives up. When Stillman kisses Debbie and wants to leave her, her consciousness comes back from the future and she wants to quarrel with him. She accuses him of controlling her life and Stillman apologizes. The two stay together, at least for this moment, as Debbie says and the film ends.
production
The film was shot in 2017 in Salt Lake City , Utah . It is based on the 2011 short film Time Freak , which director Bowler produced together with his wife Gigi Causey .
reception
The Los Angeles Times compares the movie to Hot Tub Time Machine and Don't Forget Mine! . Most of the time it is impressive how Bowler reinterprets his own Oscar-nominated short film from 2011.
