production
Manhunt: Unabomber is the first season. It was created for Discovery Communications and Kevin Spacey's production company Trigger Street Productions .
The plot is based on the life of FBI Supervisory Special Agent James R. Fitzgerald and his book A Journey to the Center of the Mind, Book III: The “First Ten” FBI Years, 1987-1997. Showrunner, producer and director Greg Yaitanes commented on the creation in an interview. Originally Manhunt: Unabomber was a story idea for a completed miniseries under the working title Manifesto . But Discovery saw the potential for an anthology in it. He goes on to say that US Attorney General Janet Reno could be the connecting link between the individual cases. In the fourth episode, Publish or Parish , the camera moves over her desk and one sees the folders of the various criminal cases like Waco, Oklahoma City in 1993 or the bombing of the World Trade Center in the same year.

Historical accuracy
Greg Stejskal , a former FBI agent involved in the UNABOM investigation, criticized the series' writers on TheWrap . He accused them of "making a star player" "a small member" of the FBI investigation team, referring to the portrayal of Jim Fitzgerald on the series. So did Fitzgerald never Kaczynski met, neither was he at the time of arrest of Kaczynski in Lincoln or Montana , yet he played a role in the search for Kaczynski's cabin. In addition, he never interrogated him.
Fitzgerald told Bustle in August 2017 that the series is in the "high 80 percentile" of accuracy, even though "the Fitz character is a composite." He also did not interview Kaczynski, although he said he was on his way there in 2007 when Kaczynski changed his mind.
The chase also took place in Billings, Montana , and not in California as shown in the series .
Season 2: "Deadly Games"
The second season revolves around the bomb attack at the 1996 Olympic Games and a series of other attacks carried out by Eric Rudolph . However, security guard Richard Jewell, who was initially celebrated as a hero, was suspected as the perpetrator . After finding a suspicious bag, he reported it to the police and helped clear the area, which saved many people. Nevertheless, he came under the FBI's sights and fell victim to a large-scale media smear campaign until the real culprit was finally caught.
