action

Hugh and Olivia move into an old house in the 80s, which they want to completely renovate and later sell again. The house offers plenty of space and a lot to discover for the children Steven, Shirley, Theodora and the twins Nell and Luke. It quickly becomes apparent that a lot of strange things are going on in the house. Olivia is getting headaches more and more often, sleepwalking and talking to herself. Luke and Nell see scary creatures. Theodora feels cold all the time and can perceive things through her hands that nobody else feels. One night there is a strong storm, which damages many windows and thus lengthens the renovation. Hugh finds the skeleton of a man behind a wall in the basement who walled himself in a long time ago. When Olivia wants to take a break from the house and the care of her family and plans to fly to her sister Janet - but does not - events roll over. Olivia returns to the house and wants to have a tea party with the twins and Luke's friend Abigail in the middle of the night in a strange room that has been locked by a red door since they moved in. When Hugh finds poison in the kitchen and Abigail is dying in the red room, he collects all the children and drives them to a motel. During this time Olivia finds herself again, sees Abigail and lets herself be made to jump from the banister of the stairs by a ghost. Later on, the children grow up with their aunt Janet and become estranged from their father through unanswered questions about their mother's death.

Steven is a writer who writes about the Hill House and does not believe in the evil forces of the house. He tries to justify all appearances with plausible explanations. Theodora is a doctor who helps frightened children and tries to keep all emotions away from herself. Shirley owns a funeral service with her husband. Luke is addicted to heroin and has been rehab for several times. Nell suffered from extreme sleep disorders for years, in which she repeatedly sees "the woman with the bent neck". She marries a sleep technologist with whom she has her problems under control. One night when she saw the ghost woman again, her husband died of an aneurysm . As a result, Nell becomes depressed and takes pills, which she repeatedly stops, and repeatedly involves her siblings in uncomfortable situations. When nobody wants to listen to her anymore, she drives to Boston and visits the motel and the house. When she enters the house, she fantasizes about her mother, husband and siblings and celebrates her wedding again. In reality, however, she is dancing through the ruins and on the same railing as her mother puts a rope around her neck and hangs herself.

Steven sees his sister Nell in his apartment, is informed about her death at that moment and sees a ghost for the first time. At this moment, Luke senses through "the twin thing" that something is wrong. Steven picks him up and tells about her death. Hugh appears at the funeral and unfortunately has to discover that the children have become very estranged from him. Shirley takes care of her sister's embalming. More and more strange things happen at the funeral. Luke disappears and steals Shirley's credit card and Theodora's car. Steve and Hugh want to find him and learn at a gas station that he has bought gas cans and apparently wants to torch the house. Luke arrives at the house and tries to torch it, but it won't ignite. He is lured into the room with the red door as a ghost by his mother. When everyone is in the house later, something lures each of the children into this room. There they meet Nell, who tells them that they have all been in this room. It was something different for everyone, it was changeable. For Luke it was a tree house, for Oliva a reading room and for Theodora her dance room. When Hugh can persuade the ghosts from outside to open the door - if he stays with her for it - the siblings can flee and drive their brother to the hospital. Only Steven and Hugh stay there. Hugh wants to show Steven what happened back then in order to come to terms with him. In retrospect, Steven sees that Hugh has made an agreement with the caretaker and his wife that they won't tell anyone about what happened if he starves the house on its own so they can visit their ghost daughter, Abigail. Hugh says that Steven now owns the house, his father is now dead.

The series ends with Steven writing a second part of his book, Theodora finally confronts her fears of attachment, Luke has been abstinent for two years and Shirley opens up to her husband Kevin. The process is shown in earlier and present-day sequences.
