Kate Siegel (born 9. August 1982 in Silver Spring as Kate Gordon Siegel Tree ) is an American actress and screenwriter . She is best known for her work in the horror genre, for example in the films Oculus , Still (which she also co-wrote the script), Ouija: The Origin of Evil, and The Game , directed by her husband Mike Flanagan , and the Netflix production Spuk in Hill House , in which she plays the lead role Theodora Crain and works again with Flanagan.

Life

Kate Siegel was born in Silver Spring, Maryland , USA in 1982 . She grew up in this city as well as in the city of Potomac . On the latter she first attended the High School of St. Andrew's Episcopal School , where she already made first acting experience in theater course. She then enrolled at Syracuse University in New York . There she continued her acting work in a theater program until she graduated with a bachelor's degree in acting in 2004 .

In a 2008 interview , Siegel publicly came out as bisexual . In early 2016, she married the director Mike Flanagan , with whom she has two children. While filming the first season of Haunted Hill House , Siegel noticed her second pregnancy as she was suffering from symptoms such as morning sickness . Siegel and Flanagan named their daughter, who was born at the end of 2018, after their character Theodora.

Career

After graduating, Siegel worked for the Washington Shakespeare Company as well as for the Folger Theater , in whose ensembles she appeared in the plays Titus Andronicus as Lavinia and Romeo and Juliet as Rosaline in Crystal City and Washington , and she was on one of them Shakespeare Festival seen as Helena in A Midsummer Night's Dream at Bell Buckle . She also played in 2006 in the play A Chorus of Disapproval by Alan Ayckbourn , the role of Linda as a member of Odyssey Theater Ensemble in Los Angeles . She had her last theater appearances in 2012 as a member of the California Shakespeare Ensemble in Was ihr wollt in the role of the viola and in 2013 in the same ensemble as Belle in Beauty and the Beast in the version of Jeanne-Marie Leprince de Beaumont , both pieces were in La Cañada Flintridge listed.

Her first film based on the case of the Black Dahlia based direct-to-video -Horror production The Curse of the Black Dahlia , she turned at the age of 24 years, in which they as Jennifer , employees of a pharmaceutical company, after the disappearance of their Assistant struggles with nightmares and hallucinations. The film was released on January 23, 2007. That same year she starred as Jenn in the drama Hacia La Oscuridad , which is about several people trying to free a male hostage within 90 minutes. The production premiered on April 28, 2007 at the Tribeca Film Festival . Siegel's third film from 2007 was the comedy Steam , in which she starred alongside Ruby Dee and Chelsea Handler as Elizabeth . Steam is about three women who know each other from their sauna visits to a fitness club and who hope for a change in their monotonous everyday life by entering into new relationships.

In 2013, Siegel first worked with Mike Flanagan , who directed her film Oculus , in which she played the ghostly woman Marisol Chavez , who seduced the main male character. This was shown for the first time on September 5, 2013 at the Toronto International Film Festival and released in theaters on April 11, 2014.

In 2015, Siegel and Flanagan, who were already in a relationship at the time, wrote the screenplay for the horror film Still , in which Siegel also played the lead role. The film is about a writer who is targeted by a serial killer, and her deafness makes her a supposedly easy target. The couple acted out the scene instructions in their home, which developed into a problem during the filming, as they could not find a space that was similar enough to this and had to rewrite the script heavily. In November 2015, it was also announced that Siegel and Flanagan would be working on a script again, as they should develop the adaptation of the youth book 13 Days to Midnight , which is about a young person who suddenly develops superpowers after his foster father has given him something whispers in his ear, but these have serious consequences for him and those around him. Still premiered on March 11, 2016 at the South by Southwest Film Festival and was released worldwide on Netflix on April 8. On October 21 of the same year, Ouija: Origin of Evil hit theaters, where Flanagan and Siegel worked together again. Siegel plays the role of Jenny Browning , who accompanies her husband to a séance during which he wants to communicate with his deceased first wife via the Ouija board .

In 2017, Siegel starred in Das Spiel , another Netflix horror self-production, Sally Burlingame , mother of the main character Jessie . The film, released on 29 September and was also directed by Flanagan, based on Stephen King 's novel of the same . Since 2018 Siegel has been part of the ensemble of the Netflix series Spuk in Hill House , an adaptation of Shirley Jackson 's book of the same name. Siegel embodies the main character Theodora Crain , a child psychologist who comes to clairvoyant information about other people through touch and extra-sensory perception . Siegel will also appear in the second season, but it was announced by Netflix that this will no longer be based on Haunted Hill House , but on the novel The Turn of the Screw by Henry James . It is not yet known what role Siegel will play.
