Strawberry Alarm Clock were a psychedelic rock group formed in Los Angeles , California in the mid- 1960s . They had their greatest success in 1967 with the million seller Incense and Peppermints .

Band history

After the band had initially worked unsuccessfully under the name Thee Sixpence , their first single Incense and Peppermints in 1967 became a number 1 hit on the Billboard charts . In total, the single stayed in the charts for 16 weeks, including one week in first place. The album of the same name, recorded and released afterwards, reached number 11. Particularly noteworthy in connection with the single is the fact that the lead vocals did not come from one of the band members, but from Greg Munford, a 16-year-old friend of the band, who happened to be with was present at the sessions.

As a result, the band was often replaced (at times there were two bassists in the lineup), but the single from the second album, Tomorrow, reached number 23 in spring 1968. Two more singles from this album made it into the Hot 100, and Her last small chart success followed in 1969 with the cover version of Good Morning Starshine from the musical Hair .

The band not only appeared in various television shows in the late 1960s, they also appeared in the feature films Psych-Out (1968) and in the Russ Meyer film Flowers Without Scent (1970). The band broke up after quarrels with management and disputes over revenue sharing in 1971, when founding member and guitarist Ed King switched to Lynyrd Skynyrd . In the 1980s, former band members gave a few concerts under the old band name, and in 2007 there was a concert with the original line-up at a film festival organized by Roger Ebert . As a result, the band also played other concerts.
