The Wachtstein is 958  m above sea level. A. high mountain in the middle of the Waldviertel in Lower Austria , about 25 km south of the district capital Zwettl . Its summit rock is the highest in the wide area and consists of several house-sized boulders made of granite , the predominant rock in the area.

A path secured with a railing leads to the top of the rock , from which you can safely jump onto the top platform. Bad Traunstein is located directly under the Wachtstein, which takes its name from the time of the Turkish wars . The settlement on the south-sloping mountain slope is between 850 and 948 m above sea level.

A boulder in front of it bears a Tau cross , which, with the granite blocks and the herb garden of the local education center at its base, gives the summit its face. The natural watchtower has served as a means of communication between the surrounding castles by means of chalk fire since the 14th century .
